Theres this thing, this medicine called anti-depressant. It has dominated my life along with my depression for the last four years. They can make you... a little happier;but a faux happiness, of course. Also theres the placebo effect. You're like, "oh, I now have these magic pills that will cure my sadness!" And you're convinced you're like, totally cured. But of course, they wear off after time, just like real happiness, and you take more and more; a higher dosage, craving the feeling of joy. But true happiness has to have a root.
Gerard seemed to be my anti-depressant. But one I wouldn't spit out and one that didn't seem to wear off.
With every blushing, cheeky smile he gave me, every time I studied the way his hazel eyes darted around rooms, the way he gets lost in books he flips out if I talk to him, the way he sighs my name into my mouth....
He's perfect in every way and I don't know what he sees in me.
The counselor walks in, snapping me out of my thoughts.
"Why am I here."
I snap.
"I just wanted to check in on you."
"Okay.." I reply,a bit softer.
"Well, uh, to start," She says, "Have there been any... special people...In your life recently?"
"Huh"
"Are you in a relationship?"
"Wi-With like a girl? No." I blush.
She sighs.
"Frank, what about a boy?"
"How did you know?!" I demanded.
"It's okay, Frank, this is a hate-free zone and is completely confidential."
"Yea. Yea, I'm with a boy. I'm in love with Gerard."
"Well; tell me about how you think you're in love with him." She responded, lingering on the "think" too long.
Think?!
"Wait, first tell me. How do you know?"
"I saw you yesterday, holding hands. And I've gotten reports from your teachers you've been spacing out a lot recently. Daydreaming maybe?"
"Well you caught me. Also, I know I'm in love with him."
"Well, love is a complex thin-"
"Can we move on, to like. Grades or family or something?" I snapped back.
-
Gerard was waiting for me outside the doors.
"Hey," he smiled. "Are you okay?"
"Yea. She just wanted to check on some things with me." I interlocked our fingers, looking down.
Gerard kissed my cheek and I blushed.
"We're like one of those couples."
I said.
"What couples?" Gerard asked, smiling and cocking his eyebrow.
I laughed. "I don't know... THOSE couples, I guess."
"Well I don't know but I'm glad we're a couple at least." He responded.
