Those words rang over and over again in my head. This was suppossed to be my out. I laid in bed while the words consumed my thoughts. I couldn't understand why I didn't get in. I had a 3.9 GPA and received a 1300 on my SATS, I met all the requirements. I looked at the other college letters that were thrown across my bed, I didn't understand why the only one I was accepted to was the community college in rural New York.
I was broken out of my thoughts when I heard the front door slam. It was 11pm which meant my father was home. I ran over to my bedroom door and locked it. I slid down the door and started to cry as my father pounded his fits on my door, and then my mother.

BEEP BEEP BEEP
I groaned and slammed my hand on the snooze button for the third time this morning. I groggily got out of bed and grabbed my clock realizing I only had thirty minutes to get ready for school. At least it was friday. I ran a brush through my hair quickly, and fishtailed it to the side of my head, threw on some skinny jeans. combat boots, and a plain white v-neck with a maroon sweater. I sighed "this is as good as it's going to get" I thought to myself like I did every morning. Thankfully the only burises my father had given me were not visible. I winced as I walked down the stairs, sore from the beating from the night before.
Previous Night:
As I cried against the door listening to my father beating my mother, I grew angry, as I listened to how helpless she was. I stood up and ripped the door open, "Stop It!" I screamed as my father kicked my mother who was laying on the floor. He looked up from my mother and smirked when he saw me.
"Todd don't!" My mother weakly said. My father just laughed and started to come towards me. I flinched as he slapped me across the face but I stood my ground. "Ooh someone's toughened up." He said laughing as he punched me in the side of my stomach. He shoved me on the ground, same as my mother, and repeatedly kicked my back, stomach and legs. "That will teach you." He growled as he went downstairs and slammed the basement door behind him. I sighed with relief, and looked across the hallway to my mother who had tears streaming down her face, as she got up and went to bed. Like she did everynight.
PRESENT :
I shook my head as tears threatened to fall as I quickly made my way down the street towards school. As much as I hated getting up to go to school, it was my escape. I put on my best smile and held my head high as I did day after day.
