"what do you mean he's your soulmate, kian?" dominic said from the safety of the doorway.
kian frantically looked around, his eyes filling with even more tears than before. behind his brown eyes hid a scared- terrified even, look.
"dom- i- i- im sorry" kian pleaded.
"why did you marry me if you love him, kian? why! why the fuck would you do that if you love him?" the disgust was clear in dominics voice.
"i hate you- both!" dominic yelled as loud as he could, balling his fists.
"sir- would you please step aside? we can't properly resuscitate him with you- with you on him" the female spoke with urgency.
"i- sorry- o-okay" he stuttered out.
he scooted away, bringing his knees to his chest and placing his head between his knees. kian began rocking back and forth, sobbing as dominic stood there, biting his nails off with his right foot tapping impatiently on the dark wood floors.
"cpr unsuccessful. charge 150" the male paramedic told the woman.
"got it- ready?" she said.
"ready"
with the defibrillator charged up, she placed it onto jc's chest. his body jolted up but it still wasn't enough. he knew he was too far gone to save by now. they couldn't save him. it was too late.
"charge 200" the male spoke again.
"ready?"
"ready"
he jolted up once again. kians eyes were peeking out from behind his knees. he was still rocking back and forth, and dom had just begun to loosen his tie.
"lets try cpr again. after, we do another round. see if it works" the medic said.
the woman began to vigorously push on jc's chest. but he knew it wouldn't work. he was too far gone. and jc, he just wanted to tell them to stop wasting their time, go help a dying person- not a dead one. but he couldn't. he could only stare at his lifeless body, screaming inaudible words to them.
an hour passed, filled with kian sobbing and doms impatient pacing.
"sarah, i think we have to call it" the male spoke in a soft tone.
she removed her hands from jc's chest and sat on her knees, brushing her gloves off.
"no! do something! you can't just- just let him die! do something, damn it! use the fucking defibrillator. cpr. give him something! wake him up! i- i need him. bring him back" kian yelled with a needy tone lacing each word.
"im sorry, sir. we have to call it"
"bring him back!" kian shouted with all his energy and might.
kian crawled over to jc, on his hands and knees, and cupped his face with his left hand. kian sat on his knees and reached forward.
"jc- i need you to come back for me. please. i love you. come back" kian whispered into jc's ear.
jc wanted to tell him that this was his fault. that he, kian's "soulmate", would not be dead if he hadn't told him he loved him. because it really was too late. jc wanted to tell him to shut up.
"time of death fourteen eighteen" the female said.
"im gonna get the stretcher and the bag. i'll be back" the male medic said, jumping up and running out of the room, into the hallway.
jc and kian- they could've been happily married. but instead, kian married dominic, a tempered italian who just happened to be just short of an alcoholic. he could've married jc and jc could've married kian.
but kian chose otherwise when he decided not to look jc in eyes and tell him three simple words: i love you.
