You don't realize you've started singing out loud to the music in your earbuds.
"Are you - Are you listening to Peaches???" Sam asks with a huge grin.

"Don't judge me," you retort. You try to hold a straight face, but his eyes just... You can't. You have to laugh, too.
"So I know it's not polite to ask a woman her age, but... you just aged yourself."
"Oh, really. Says the man who recognized the song through someone else's earbuds."
"Uh, correction: someone was singing."
"That doesn't excuse you."
"Alright. Fine. You got me. Generation Y through and through."
"Best years in music."
"The nineties?"
"Cheah."
He snickers. "Yeah, don't let my brother hear you say that." Like the flip of a switch, his demeanor changes and his lightheartedness is just... gone.
After a few moments, you say, "Sam?" The angle from your seat gives you a perfect view of his profile and his downcast eyes. He's turned his head toward the aisle, and you see his jaw shift between his cheekbones and his ears. He's quiet, but it's so much more than that. You can feel it. The urge to touch his arm surprises you, but you resist. "You okay?"
He presses his eyelids and takes a quick, cleansing breath, then comes back to you. "Yeah. I was just... I got a little light-headed for a minute."
"Hm," you say, looking out the window, taking the hint that he doesn't want to talk about it. You understand that more than anyone. "Altitude change, maybe?"
"Wouldn't surprise me." Whatever it was, he seems fine now. "So, uh, who was your favorite band?"
"How can you ask me that?" you say, almost laughing.
"Oh, you're one of those."
"One of those what?" As you look at him, you think, He's so fun to talk to.
"You know... you like a bunch of different songs from a bunch of different bands."
"What's wrong with that?"
"Nothing. Absolutely nothing," he says, shaking his head.
"Good. Then, who's your favorite band?"
"From the nineties?"
"Mm-hm. Pick one."
The way his mouth opens and closes gives him away.
