Chapter 1: Ten Years Later
“Caine, I can’t do it! It’s too hard!”
“Yes you can, Eva! Use the sword!” Evangeline looked at the tree stump with slashes all over it. She would never be able to break it in half, it was a monster!
Leonora stepped outside and stopped in horror, “Caine! That thing is the size of her! Come inside now, I do not appreciate all the yelling while I am trying to put Aiden down for a nap.”
Evangeline walked past Leonora and through the door, “Sorry Nora,”
“As long as it never happens again….”
Caine walked past Leonora and gave her a little kiss on her cheek, “You added to the yelling, Nora. Anyways, Aiden doesn’t need rest. He will be a warrior!”
“Warrior, or not, he needs rest.”
They both walked inside and shut the wooden door quietly.
“So… I was thinking since I’ve been practicing so hard that I should get my first mission.”
Leonora and Caine laugh, “It’s not a mission. We are just trying to prepare you in case something was to happen. Something similar to what happened with your father.”
“But, Caine, I’ve been practicing so much and trying twice as hard as anyone would. I mean I would like to do something with these skills.”
“Go in the woods then and practice with live trees not just the stumps.”
“Great. That sounds like great fun, Caine. Thank you for that. Nora, do you have any ideas, any missions for me?” She sarcastically remarked.
“Ah, none better than what Caine suggested, Eva, I’m sorry.”
“No, that’s great. I’ll just go do that, then.” Eva slammed the wooden door behind her.
Leonora shrugged, “Now what can we do with her? She needs more. How did her father survive raising her himself?”
“Nora, we promised to protect her and teach her to protect others. We gave her father our word, and I intend to keep it no matter how hard she gets.”
“Well I certainly wasn’t suggesting sending her on her own I was simply saying how difficult she can be.” They both sat staring at the door until Aiden started crying. “I will get him, Caine. Since you only care that he becomes a fighter.”

Evangeline walked through the moss covered forest until she stumbled along the pond that she had run to the night her father was taken.
“I didn’t fight. I gave up. Where is he now? What happened?” She asked the woods. Tears trickled down her face softly, to remind her that the pain she felt was real.
But there was no one there to answer her. She sat down sticking her feet into the pond. If only there was someone who could help her find her father. Not Caine or Leonora, they think he’s long dead. But Evangeline can feel him with her, still. She hasn’t yet told Leonora or Caine about her strength; the power she has over people. Especially the hunter in the woods that night.
