Sophia's POV
" Finally!" The man who I recognized as their leader growled. " Now, no tricks." He gestured at Alicia, who was clenching her fists. " Remember, dearie, you're surrounded." His sugar sweet voice made me want to puke. Joreen had zoned out again, and I nudged her. Her eyes snapped back, and she stood a little straighter.
" He's...coming?" Joreen whispered confusedly, and was about to go back into her trancey state when I nudged her again.
Obviously the leader caught that nudge, because he said," Remember, no games!" Suddenly, a powerful gust of wind made the leader topple over and a few of his men's guns to fall. The rest of them placed in ammunition and started the timer for the bombs. I read it. Five minutes.
Alicia took that as the signal to fight. A huge blaze started burning, feeding off the trees and smelling wonderful. The funnel started to smoke, and I caught sight of Alicia. Her eyes burned bright red.
" What are you waiting for!" The leader yelled, a bead of sweat rolling down his face. " Shoot!"
" But...sir," A man protested. " The leader said to bring them alive."
" I don't care what he said!" Their leader stared at him. " He's not risking his life in the field now, is he? And out here in the field, I'M your leader, not Pierce." Said man shrunk back and nodded. The men placed their gun on their shoulders.
" Joreen!" Alicia said, her voice strained. " A little help here!" Joreen nodded and blew a gust of wind towards the direction of the fire. Feeding off the fuel, Alicia could keep it up longer, and visibly relaxed. The fire started to spread. The men were forced back by the enormous blaze. The sheer heat of it was palpable.
" Sophia!" Joreen exclaimed. " Go! He's coming!" I looked at her, confused.
" What?" I asked.
" He'a coming! Just go!" Joreen exclaimed.
" Okay! So what do I do?" I asked. Alicia rolled her eyes.
" You do your thing, of course!" Alicia said. I nodded, suddenly understanding. Alicia and Joreen were obviously going to run out of ammunition soon, although they were keeping up a brave act. I would soon have to support them by keeping the men back until we could escape or something. There had to be a way!
" Let me through the wall!" I exclaimed. Joreen's eyes widened and Alicia shifted wearily.
" But it's dangerous!" Joreen exclaimed.
" Look, you want me to do my thing, I'm doing it. So let me out on the count of three and I'll pull them away. When I yell, you guys drop the shield and head for the trees. If I die, don't come back for me." Joreen looked unsure, but Alicia looked more than ready to drop the fire. Already its heat and size were diminishing, as Alicia and Joreen pushed their underfed bodies to their utmost.
" Now!" I exclaimed and the shield dropped, leaving just enough space for me to get through. When I was out, I gave the signal and the fire blazed high again. The men looked at me, confused, wondering why I was out of the shield.
" What are you waiting for? Christmas? SHOOT HER! NOW! I'M NOT LOSING HER AGAIN!" Their leader shouted and I panicked. Starting to run, I shot off into the safety of the woods. Hearing footsteps behind me confirmed that the men were indeed chasing me. Picking up the pace, I ran faster, hoping to pass a stream or river so that I could jump into it and escape. Remembering Joreen and Alicia, I screamed just to let them know to dive for cover.
" On my command! NUMBER ONE!" The leader yelled. Gunshots came from behind me and I ducked into the trees. " NUMBER TWO!" And more gunshots, aiming to kill, came from behind me. Just then, I spotted a pretty creek right nearby. Racing over to it, I jumped right in, waiting for the men to take the bait. Obviously, they were stupid enough to jump in with me, beginning to speed wade towards me.
I was banking this all on the fact that there are three states of water: Solid, liquid and gas. Obviously water was the liquid form, and gas wouldn't help me. So, if my theory was correct, I would be able to change the states of the water.
Closing my eyes, I focused very hard and started to think thoughts of cold, the ice and stuff like that. Hearing screams from the men, I opened my eyes slightly. It had worked! All the mens' feet were trapped in the now frozen creek. Extracting myself from the ice, I waved coyly at them.
" See ya later." I said lightly, as if we had just finished a meeting and were planning to meet up again later. The men scowled. As their guns were trapped in the frozen water, they couldn't do anything about it.
Wait. Where was Alicia and Joreen? Rushing back to the clearing, I spotted Joreen with a few more men at her side. Alicia had fainted from exhaustion, and Joreen looked weak and tired. Spotting me, Joreen let out a shout, but the men had saw me and started firing at random. A bullet nicked my shoulder and fresh blood started dripping from the wound.
" It's such a shame," One of the men said. " You could've been such a useful asset to us. Too bad your life ends. Here." Before I could react, a gun was put to my head. " And before you think of escaping, remember, I'll be faster then you. So much as a tiny move to the side or a hand signal to your little friend there and a bullet will be put into your brain before you can even make your next move." I panted. We were obviously cornered.
" What do you want?" I breathed out. The man laughed evilly.
" Your blood, of course." I stared in confusion. " Well, you see girl, there's a virus implanted in you that we want. So we'll have to get your blood to have it. As long as we can get it, we're going to dispose of you as quickly as we can. So you have no way out." The man intoned boredly, as if killing a person just for their blood was perfectly normal. Pressing the barrel of the gun deeper into my head, his finger rested on the trigger.
Suddenly, vines crawled up the man's hand, surrounding him. The gun was brutally claimed by the vines as they tore into his skin, making him scream with pain.
" What the...?" The man screeched, reminding me of a cat. The rest of the men were blocked off with a stone wall, and only Alicia, Joreen, the man and I were trapped inside.
" Have no fear, I'm here to save you!" Came a voice. It reminded me of the tree leaves whispering in the wind.
" Who are you?" I breathed.
