Sophia's POV
I don't really know what happened last night. I only remember us doing some awesome stuff and escaping the orphanage then collapsing onto our bed of soft moss and heather which I am currently lying on.
" Oh my God Sophia! You should have told me!" Alicia exclaimed. I jumped up from my comfortable bed, dusted myself off and stared at Alicia.
" What do you mean?" I asked.
" Your powers! You should have told me!" Alicia said.
" Well, considering that I didn't know, and only found out yesterday, I'm pretty sure that's a good excuse!" I said. Alicia shook her head.
" But you were the one who was supposed to tell me!" I exclaimed. Alicia looked down at her feet and played with her shoulder length strawberry blonde hair.
" I can't. I'm not supposed to." Alicia whispered, so soft that I had to stoop low to hear it.
" Why?" I asked.
" Well, there's this place called Everglen, and it's a secret place where humans are forbidden to enter. Those who do are punished by death. And you wouldn't like their definition of death." She said the word death like it was a curse, almost like she didn't want to say the word at all. " Yeah, and the rulers are the Sun God and the Moon Goddess. Basically, two years ago, an initiative was formed. It was called the Elementals initiative. Basically, every country in Everglen had to send one representative to earth which would have a virus implanted in them. This virus would allow them to have variations of the powers of the country they were representing. But the initiative was canceled. It was forbidden as the Sun God thought that humans should be left to their own devices. But some countries wanted to go on with the initiative. Behind the Sun God's back, they made a pact: the countries with the strongest powers would send their representatives as children, while the rest would send them as adults. The adults would know their purpose, the kids would not. So the virus was illegally obtained and inserted into four strongest children, and into several adults."
" And...we are two of them?" I asked, my brain churning with the new information. Alicia nodded. " But the pyrokinectics, my kind of people, disobeyed the disobeyed rules. They told their representative-me-my objective. They sort of implanted it into my brain along with the virus." I blinked. The information overload was making my head spin.
" So...now we have to find the other Elementals?" I liked the way the word rolled off my tongue. Alicia shook her head.
" They will find us. In the meantime, we concentrate on surviving." Alicia started to walk.
" Wait! Where are you going?" I asked Alicia. She slowly turned around and shrugged.
" Well, figured I might as well walk somewhere since we're here already."
" No." This word didn't come from me. I looked around and saw the same girl from yesterday. The one who had sneaked up on me when I was enjoying my quiet time.
" You!" I spluttered. She nodded.
" Yeah," she said. " Me."
" What are you doing here?" Her unnaturally pale eyes and complexion makes her look wispy.
" Me? Taking care of you two." She answers smartly. I stare at her.
" You're joking." I say. She shakes her head.
" No, I'm not," She says. My brain, once again, is fazed with the difficulty of processing an information overload.
" Wait..." Alicia screws up her eyes. " You're...another one. Another one!" The girl nods.
" The name's Joreen," she says. " My element is wind." We nodded. Makes sense though. She even looks the part-wispy hair, glasses, pale coloured clothes...
" Your race was called...?" Alicia asks.
" Aria." Joreen answers. I feel left out, being the only one uninformed of these things.
" I'm a pyrokinetic( sorry I have no idea if I spelled that right)." Alicia replied.
Joreen turns to me with a weird look on her face. " You..." She gasped and trailed off, her eyes turning distant. I shuffled uncomfortably. When Joreen came back, she pointed to me. " What's your race?" She asked.
" I have no idea. Sorry!" I replied. Alicia looked at Joreen weirdly.
" She's of the aqua race, duh," Alicia replied. Joreen nodded.
" No, but do you know which part?" Joreen asked, her nearly white eyes stared into me, seeming to bore right into my soul. In the light of the crazy things that have been happening recently, they probably were. When no one answered her question, Joreen breathed in an awed voice," Piõsa" Alicia gasped. Her eyes held a new emotion that I couldn't read.
" That race is...extinct." Alicia said. I shifted uncomfortably.
" Wait, what? So now you're telling me my race is extinct when I'm standing right here?" I cut in.
" Presumed extinct." Joreen corrected. " The last record of them being around is like super long ago!"
" Okay, yeah, so now change that date to..." I tail off, checking my watch. " September, 2016" They both roll their eyes.
" Wait. If I've got this correct, which I won't, there are only three of us. There are supposed to be four, right?" Joreen and Alicia looks at each other uneasily.
" The Terras, they are very distant. No one knows if they consented to sending representatives down to earth or not." Joreen explained.
" Whoa, whoa!" I say. " So you're telling me you have no idea if there are any others like us out there, suffering in ' protective' custody?" Alicia looks downwards and Joreen avoids my gaze.
" Yes," Alicia eventually whispers. Judging by the looks on their faces, I must have widened my eyes.
" Look, it doesn't matter," Joreen says, running a hand through her hair. " What's more important is, we need to find a place to stay." She ignores the sarcastic looks Alicia is shooting her. " And by place, I mean my apartment." She beckons to us. " Come on, let's go."
Joreen's POV
Wow. I cannot believe she is a Piõsa. That race is like, extinct! Well. It doesn't matter. Now, we just need to get back to my place so that the police won't catch up with us and bring us for questioning. It's not like they will believe the story anyway. I mean, like, a bunch of teenage mutants on the run? Definitely questionable. For non-mutants, anyway. For now, I'll just focus on the road back.
Alicia's POV
Where is this place again? Um, a mile, two miles? Or maybe ten? I don't know. But all I know is that Joreen's place was very far from the place we met at. I have to admit, I have seen the girl before. Once or twice. I've sensed the aura around her. But I'm not experienced enough to know, like she did. Eh. I'll probably be around the same as her. Next time.
Sophia's POV
Alicia had been keeping silent throughout most of the walk - trek, actually. Apparently Joreen's apartment was on top of a small hill along with other small houses. It was quite close to the city, and would be the perfect place to ' disappear' in. As we walked, I tried to fill the gaping hole of silence with small talk with Joreen, or occasionally Alicia. Soon, I stopped trying to ease up the awkwardness and continued walking. The distracting hole of silence was interrupted by the insects' chirping, but other than that, it was so quiet I was pretty sure everyone else could hear my thoughts.
" We're here," Joreen said, shattering my reverie to pieces on the floor. Alicia's glazed up eyes snapped back to life, her body jolting back to attention. Alicia burst into a flood of unstoppable talk. Suddenly, after the silence of earlier, the still air carried the voice and amplified it, making it ten times louder than it should have been. We went into the apartment, and it instantly cheered our gloomy spirits.
The sound of the radio and television was wonderful to hear after months of silence, even if all it did broadcast the news. As my brain fumbled to adjust back to normal living, the newscaster's voice suddenly rang out," This just in: A pair of children have just escaped from their orphanage, leaving chaos behind. Alicia Regner and Sophia Lennet have just escaped after some amazing feats. We now switch to Hailee, our reporter, who is at the scene. Hailee?" The camera switched to a close-up of a pretty young lady holding a mike.
" Yes, Brenda-as you can see behind me," and the camera zoomed out to a background of a slightly burnt orphanage and medics running around everywhere. " It is indeed a state of chaos as the medics try to find survivors amongst this wreckage. Here I have a witness, Mrs Jennifer, who was at the scene as the girls tried to escape. Mrs Jennifer?" And the camera panned slightly sideways, revealing the shaken orphanage owner.
" The girls were trying to escape me," she gulped. " and I, doing my job, was trying to talk them out of it. Suddenly, I was engulfed in a sea of water. No matter how much I tried to swim away, I was held tight by the water ball. Suddenly, just as I was about to faint, the water gushed away from me and I fell onto the wet floor. Then a fire started on the roof and the tiles just started dripping. They caught my shoulder, and the next second, those girls were gone." Other witnesses gave their statements, showing that it was very likely to be us.
" Yes, Brenda, it seems like these happenings were caused by the girls, leaving us on the theory of mutants." The camera switched back to the news studio.
" Yes. All the witnesses there can only conclude that they were mutants, who wanted to escape. There have been no other evidences, but the only conclusion is that mutants - aliens, really - might be roaming around the earth." The slight wobble in the newscaster's serious voice indicated that she did not believe anything she had said at all. " Police are now searching for the girls. If you spot them, you need not approach them, but please contact the nearest police station immediately. Now, moving on to other news..." The seriousness of the situation we had landed in finally sank in, and I was immediately hit by another wave of desperation that the news had given me. As my brain struggled to process the information, only one statement kept repeating itself in my head:
We were fugitives.
