Two
Elliot?” I gasped. Behind me, Mark leapt up and practically ran to my side. Mark was in our year, in some of my classes and knew Elliot pretty well.
“Well princess, this is a nice surprise.” Elliot smirked.
“But now I think about it, it does explain where you go off to half the time.”
I shook my head, speechless.
“Oh, and Mark.” he continued. “Nice to see you too, mate.”
He patted Mark on the back, who patted back. I slammed the door and stormed to Smith’s room. I pounded at it. It opened up and there stood Smith.
“Are you trying to destroy my door, Jade?” he asked. I ignored him.
“What is he doing here?!” I yelled. “Please don’t tell me this is who you’ve got!”
“Elliot?” he replied calmly. “He is a good fighter, clever and brave. He was also eager to join us. I thought he was perfect, and the fact that you two are friends already.”
“But he’s an idiot!” I argued.
“Love you too, Jade!” I heard Elliot mutter behind me. I threw him a dirty look over my shoulder. Mark was shaking his head ferociously, telling me to be silent. I took a deep breath and sank in to the armchair. Everyone was watching Smith apart from Jesse, who was watching me with curiosity. I looked away.
“Everyone, this is Elliot.” Smith announced. “He will be your new team member, attends St Josephs high and obviously knows Mark and Jade. Have ten minutes to introduce yourselves and I will return with your assignment.”
He left and slammed his door, leaving an awkward silence. I turned a rock music channel on to avoid talk whilst I tapped out the drum beat on the sofa. Mark gave me a look so I turned the volume down, low.
Mark came and sat on the armrest of my chair, his arms folded across his chest. Naomi stood up to shake Elliot’s hand, who returned it with a half-smile. Naomi blushed but covered it with sarcasm.
“I’m Naomi, amazing, beautiful, clever, brilliant fighter.” she told him, winking at me behind his back. I rolled my eyes.
Jesse stayed quiet in the corner. Elliot was waiting for him to speak.
“That’s Jesse.” Mark told him. Jesse gave Elliot one of his nods and continued to survey the room in silence. Elliot was sitting on the sofa next to Naomi.
“So, can you give me a few tips on…this?” He asked her. Naomi exploded into a vibrant conversation with him and Mark moved to the other side of her to speak as well. I felt enclosed and needed fresh air. I told them I’d be back in five minutes and went outside, sitting on a park bench. I’d been alone for all of half a minute until someone sat down beside me.
“So, you don’t like the new boy then.” Jesse said.
“Elliot’s my friend,” I shrugged. “But it’s too dangerous to let him get mixed up in all of this.”
“He looks like he can handle himself.”
I thought about back in the Hot-Hut earlier and him defending me.
“Yeah, maybe.” I replied after a while. “What do you think?”
“I don’t know him well enough yet.” Jesse said.
I started to speak when something dawned on me.
“I have never heard you say so much!” I exclaimed. He laughed, which was the first time I’d ever heard that either.
