The inside was polished and spacious. Their reflections shone, and their voices echoed. The sound of a thousand breaths like giant waves pressed against the outside of the machine. They went to the year 2076. FreyFrey was told to stay inside, but when Jack exited she saw a glimpse of darkness. She sat there alone in the darkness and cold and silence. Hours went by. Long after FreyFrey was worried, Jack returned. He did not say a single word on the return journey. Outside the machine on Earth back to the day when they first met, as promised, he said

"There was a great war. I had some things to take care of."

Jack drove FreyFrey home in his truck. She ran through her front door and hugged her father. He had been crying. They talked all night. FreyFrey told her dad that she had only gone down the road a little, and that she had fallen asleep. Then she left her own little world.

"I wore mom's earrings every day, and the thing is I miss her, and it hurt. It hurt to have that peice of her and still be sad. It hurt to not let myself be sad on the outside. I made my own world, a lived a different life, but I only want to be me and to have you. I don't need exciting change to numb the emptiness."

Two months later Jack was over for dinner. He made tea for the family. FreyFrey sat next to Danny, and her dad sat next to Jack.
