Chris joined her back at the table.
"So what's this you've got to tell me?" He spoke as if the last few moments hadn't happened, like he'd never said anything, tucking in to his meal.
"The house warming, we've set a date. Last Saturday of this month, bbq if it's sunny." Laura leaned over the table, pushing papers around until she found the list they had written. "That's who we've invited." Chris looked down the list. The difference between Ricky and Laura's handwriting was evident on the last name on the list.
"You're inviting Gavin?" There was shock in Chris' voice that Laura hadn't expected.
"Ricky didn't want to, but I said we should. Why?" she asked, intrigued to know why he was shocked.
"Like you said, Ricky wouldn't want him. I'm not bothered either way." He didn't sound convincing. Laura pushed her curry around the plate. Before putting her fork down.
"You're not angry are you, about what I said a moment ago?" Laura felt she had to ask, Chris being standoffish as he was.
"No, not at all. Forget I ever asked." He saw here expression, "Honestly Laura, please, forget I ever said anything." She began eating again.
"I wouldn't want anything to come between our friendship. I wouldn't want to lose it I mean." Laura's cheeks reddened as she spoke, thinking about how close they had just been.
"Lose a friendship for telling the truth?" Chris shook his head. "I shouldn't have asked. I am sorry. You and Ricky, well you're perfect for each other. You as tense as he is relaxed." Chris noticed the look on Laura's face, "Not in a bad way. But you can't get more laid back than our Ricky. And you, well, you can get worked up."
Laura shuffled in her chair. "Only when I feel strongly about something."
"Oh it's not a bad thing, to be emotional about things." Chris felt like he'd fallen in to a hole that he now had to dig himself out of. "I'm just going to shut the fuck up." He returned to eating. Laura watched him for a moment, then went back to her meal too.
No more was said about it for the rest of the evening. The talked about Chris' show, his upcoming break and holiday to America. Everything friends would discuss. Just after nine o'clock, Chris announced it was time he went home. Laura walked him to the front door. He put his hand on the handle before turning to face Laura.
"Thanks for tonight. It beat sitting in doors alone." He picked up a bag he'd left by the door.
"Any time. And I mean that. Ricky loves having you around..."
"And you?" Chris interrupted.
"Of course I like having you around." Laura didn't really know if she believed what she was saying herself.
"I'm alright. Don't fancy being green and furry every night!" He pulled open the door and stepped out. Laura stepped out behind him as he suddenly turned. "Give Ricky a ring back, tell him how much you love him." Laura looked at him confused. "There's got to be some happiness in this world. See you at the house warming!"
She watched him go down the path and get in his car, raising his hand to her as he drove away. Shutting the door, Laura leant against it, her mind racing as to what Chris had meant. Why was he so eager for her to tell Ricky she loved him? She was dragged from her thoughts by her phone ringing in the kitchen. Ricky’s name was on the screen.
"Hiya! You free now?" Laura made herself comfortable on the sofa.
"Hi. Yeah, back at the hotel. I've just ordered something to eat." She could hear him moving stuff about then a bounce as he landed on the bed.
