One thing before you start reading. The first few chapters will be short. But as I get into the story more, the chapters will get much longer, believe me. Thanks! On with the chapter.

Roy

As I led scrawny down the hall, he glanced around, his curls bouncing around. I reached the cafeteria. I stepped inside, and everyone looked up. I turned around, and Mercy stepped through, helping a frail women through. My heart fluttered. She was so kind-hearted. She looked up and blushed when she saw me looking. I immediately looked away. Scrawny looked at me. Then he smirked. I punched him in the arm.

"Say nothing." I threatened. He chuckled.

"No promises." He replied. I shook my head.

"Well, the food here is surprisingly good. Lets go." I walk up to the counter, and Amanda, a high school student looks up at me. I groan. She fumbles with the tray, dropping a tray of meatballs and spilling the teriyaki sauce all over the nice floor. She looks up at me, her face bright red.

"Sorry." She muttered. I nod curtly. Scrawny glances over at me. I shall my head.

"Shes a high school freshman. Mercy hired her because she felt bad for her. I try to be nice to her, but she has feelings for me." Scrawny laughs. "Why are you laughing? Nothing is funny right now. Nothing." I saw. He just laughs harder. Suddenly, Mercy appears in front of me. She smiles nervously, tucking a strand of curly brown hair behind her ear.

"Hi. What can I get for you?" She asks.

"Um...the spaghetti?" I ask. She nods, scooping a heap of the pasta onto my plate. I take it from her, my hand brushing hers. I yank my hand back, and a noodle falls to the floor. My mind goes to the girl from earlier. With hair like my Ruby. I glanced up at Mercy's face, and saw the hurt in her eyes. Scrawny looked at me questioningly. I turned around and weaved through the tables, choosing the one closest to the door. A few minutes later, Scrawny came back, a plate full of fruit in his hand. He set it down, then sat down. He was quiet for a few moments, and then asked.

"Hey, man, what was that? I can tell you're like, in love with her. Why'd you pull back like that?" He asked. I ignored him, trying to drown my emotions in spaghetti sauce. He pressed on. "Hey, Roy?" He said softly. I finally looked up. His eyes bored into mine, tearing secrets from my soul. "I loved someone once. But I didnt have enough nerve to tell her, and when I finally scraped up enough courage to tell her, it was too late. Dont make the same mistake." He said. Then, he got up, and left. I sat there, dumbfounded. Then I stood up, walked slowly towards the counter, went around the end, and into the kitchen. Mercy's graceful fingers carefully braided the old woman's wispy hair. She smiled and spoke softly to her. The woman laughed faintly. Mercy's tinkling laugh rang throughout the kitchen, putting a smile on my face. I gripped her arm. She turned, startled.

"Can I have a word?" I asked softly. She nodded unsurely. I pulled her away to a shadowed corner, and turned back to her. "Mercy, I..." My voice broke. So instead, I pushed her into the wall and kissed her. After a moment, she pushed me away, tears in her eyes, and ran out, her sobs echoing through the kitchen. I watched her go.
