"What the heck were you two doing?!"
Mordecai frowned, “We were just talking.”
"Oh really? Wrapping your arms around each other is "talking"?
"Yes."
"And I suppose that locking lips is your way of "talking" too?"
Mordecai went quiet, “I…um…”
Benson sighed irritably. He clenched and unclenched his hands, the red in his face dying down the longer the silence lingered. Mordecai felt sick.
"Why do you love Margaret anyway Mordecai? She’s only going to reject you after dating your sorry butt for a couple months."
Mordecai saw red, “Oh and what would you know? You’ve never even met Margaret properly!”
"I don’t need to meet her. Her reputation tells me so much already."
"Why do you care so much? What makes you want to…block me off from her?!"
Benson fell silent, but it wasn’t from Mordecai’s rise in tone. He let the anger burn out then pinched the bridge of his nose, avoiding Morcecai’s eyes but a dark frown curled his lips. He closed his eyes, let out a deep sigh, opened them then turned.
Mordecai watched Benson walk away from him. The gumball machine grabbed his coat and the blue jay stepped forward.
"Benson, wait-"
But the door shut and Mordecai was left with a pit of worry and regret in his gut. He was also left to think. The sound of nails tapping against the window made him look up and he frowned when he saw the “tapping” was rain. His mind went straight to Benson and his eyes widened. Walking to the door, he grabbed a rain coat, and umbrella, and swung the door open.
He put the umbrella up when he got to the second step and squinted his eyes as he looked around for any sign of the gumball machine, to finally see him leaning against a lamp post.
"Benson!" Mordecai carefully made his way down the steps and to his boss.
Benson glanced back and the blue jay caught sight of a distraught expression on his face before he turned back. A stone settled in Mordecai’s stomach. He swallowed and wiped the rain away from his face as he hurried to him.
He touched his shoulder. “Benson.”
The gumball machine turned his head and when he saw Mordecai standing behind him, he opened his mouth, tears slowly tracking down his cheeks. “So you’re just gonna go ahead and date her are you? Well, don’t come crying to me when she dumps you, ‘cause I’m not going to help you get back on your feet.” He started to cry and the rain began mixing with his tears. Benson tasted salt. “I just feel sorry for you, that you’re going to make this decision, when it’s just gonna come crashing down on you-“
Mordecais eyes darted across his face and without hesitation, he cupped Bensons face with one hand and gently kissed him, slow and careful as to see how he would react.
Benson went numb.
Mordecai pulled back and Bensons eyes were wide; he could see through the lights of the house.
"Oh god, Benson, I…" Mordecai struggled for an explanation. He shut his mouth and just stared at the gumball machine, who was trying to make his mind work.
"You…..you kissed me…," he finally said.
Mordecai flushed red, “Y-yeah.”
Benson forced himself to relax, “But……Margaret,” was all he could get out.
Mordecai shook his head, “that was only a goodnight kiss.”
"So it didn’t mean anything?"
"No. Oh and by the way, why were you so hyped up about it?"
Benson swallowed. He let out a sigh and dropped his gaze, “Because….because I like you Mordecai. And I wanted to make sure you wouldn’t get hurt.”
Mordecai smiled. He lifted Bensons chin, “I like you too Benson.”
"You do?"
"Yeah." Mordecai kissed him again, this time longer, and Benson relaxed.
