{Note: this isn't 10k just a little 5k thing}
Crows.
They were starting to get on your nerves, but they were definitely up to something.
For the last two miles or so, they've been circling above you squawking like there's no tomorrow (which in this day and age it might just be) then flying west of you, squawking all the way then flying back to circle you and repeat.
The two had gotten your attention quickly it was impossible not to notice them, being so loud and you'd caught on to their little tactic pretty quickly.
So, not really having anything better to do and having all the time left in the world, you followed them.
You're following crows.
If zombies never happened you'd think you were crazy to be following crows, but when in the Apocalypse, crazy is key.A few minutes later you started to hear more crows, coming from the same direction your 'guides' were taking you.
You stopped on a hill for a second, lifting your binoculars from around your neck and checking out where all the ruckus was coming from.
A huge flock of crows, probably around thirty, minus the two above you, all perched on the ground and objects around on area and squawking loudly, there had to be something there worth checking out.Shouldering your bag you picked up your pace following the crows above you and heading for the flock.
When you reached the crows they got louder, as if yelling at your for something, and hopping out of your path just enough to walk through.
In the middle of them all, with two crows close to him was a boy, just a kid, laying on the ground covered in blood.
He wasn't turning Z but he sure wasn't moving either.
You dropped your bag and rushed over to him, all the crows went silent when you dropped to your knees next to the boy.
Not seeing any obvious cause of death on his torso you turned his head, checking for any wounds to see if he'd been mercy'd but finding none you put your head to his chest, straining to hear any signs of life-
"CAW!"
You quickly fell backwards, not without giving a small screech of your own in surprise. The boy, very much alive, was sitting up giving you the look a panicked animal would, the crows were cawing again and flapping their wings as if celebrating.
The boy turned his head, frantically scanning all the surrounding area before looking back at you.
You put your hand on his leg slowly, trying not to startle him further "Hey, are you alri-"Before you could finish your sentence he jumped up and took of running towards the red covered buildings in the distance, not being able to just leave him out here alone you grabbed your bag and chased after him.
"Wait up! Kid!"
He was insanely fast for a kid but you caught up to him as he reached the buildings, trying to open the doors.
"Kid, c'mon" you rested your hand on his shoulder and he spun to face you "sister" was all he said and ran into the building, you right behind him.
He flipped each corpse he came across and you followed him, machete in each hand ready for any Z's.You went through each room in the building, finding nothing alive (or dead-alive if you prefer for zombies)
You tried getting his attention but all he did was caw at you once and keep running, this time towards the back and surrounding buildings, checking any corpses he saw, trying to find someone.
You sliced down any approaching Z's, clearing every one from the area by the looks of it. But he didn't find whoever he was looking for.
Having searched everywhere with no luck, he stopped, standing perfectly still and staring at the ground and mumbling a quiet "sister"You put your weapons back in their sheaths and walked up to a few feet behind him and stopped, this time not trying to talk or get him to explain anything.
He turned back to you, you could see tears in his eyes not falling and he ran into your arms.
You were surprised by his impact but returned his hug and rubbed circles on his back"Shh, shh. It's ok, are you looking for someone? Your sister?" you felt him nod against your jacket.
You stepped back and looked him in the eyes "Do you have a name?"
A simple enough question but he thought about it for a moment "5k" was all he answered.
You decided not to question that "Alright 5k, how bout I try and help you find your sister, would that work?"
He nodded and cawed at you
Letting out a sigh of relief, you couldn't let him be left alone, not that you had any clue where his sister could be.
You adjusted your bag and stood up straight, glancing around you "So, which way do we go 5k?"
He looked up, watching all the crows who now seemed to be flying without any purpose and pointed in the direction of the far off trees and looked back to you with a caw, maybe asking you?You shrugged, "Good as a direction as any." You started walking, checking to make sure he was following you when you felt a tug at your back pocket.
He had pulled out your slingshot and was aiming and stretching it
"You like that? You're welcome to use it I guess"
He sped up slightly to walk next to you
You glanced towards the sky and saw one of the crows following above you, this could be interesting.
