Isobel lies stretched out on the sofa. She has just awakened. She glances across at Raymond. He is sitting opposite her on the other chair with his eyes closed. He looks uncomfortable. He opens his eyes and catches her gaze.
"I'd like to thank you for coming to get me. You probably think I'm mad," she said.
"I don't think you're mad. I just couldn't leave you there, No matter what Brendan said."
"Oh! What did he say?"
"He said nothing."
"Tell me."
"He just thought that it would be better if we came and got you in the morning..."
She thinks to herself. "Oh!"
"....It would teach you a lesson," Raymond said.
She laughs. "Teach me a lesson!"
"I thought it would be too scary leaving you there, so I came back and got you."
"Does Brendan know you came to get me?"
"No! I didn't tell him."
"What would you think he'd say if he knew you did this? What way do you think he'd react?"
Raymond looks worried. "I don't know?" He said.
"I'm glad you did. Brendan and I haven't been getting on as well as we should lately. I know you're his friend, but when he talks of you it's always with a shrug, 'Oh Raymond wouldn't do this' or 'Raymond wouldn't do that,' she said. "By acting the way you did last night, you've shown him you're not afraid or as reliable as he thinks. And you know what, I think he knows it."
"Brendan looks out for me. He's always done..."
"You two have got a thing that I can't even begin to know. Maybe that's what he is afraid of losing. I want you to do something for me Raymond. I want you to come away with me, far away from this place and all its intrusions."
"I don't know," he said.
"What would Raymond do?"
"But where will we go?"
"Anywhere!"
"But when?"
"Now!"
"But how?"
"Will you stop asking me bloody questions?"
"I...I. Could take my father's car!"
She looks at him open-eyed. "Yes! That's more like it! She said. "I want you to promise me that you won't tell Brendan that you came to get me."
"I don't want to lie to him," he said.
"Promise me!"
"I promise."
"It's easier to lie, whenever you've been lied to."
