Being thrown off balance, nearly off my hooves, I collide into Thunder. He snorts, shaking his head.
" Sorry." I mutter. With a hiss of the brakes, the truck pulling us shuts off. Barely being able to look out the window opening, all I can see is the sky. Scarlet, being a hand and a half, or so, taller than me looks out and whinnies. A whinny returns and another comes from inside the trailer somewhere.
The trailer door clunks open with a screech. My ears flick forwards and I look over, having to peek out from Scarlet's chest. She squeals, letting me know to back off and get away. I return to my position with my head hung and my back hoof cocked. The sound of hooves click and clack down the ramp and eventually, Scarlet gets taken away too. As she turns her tail to me, I whinny. She looks back, then is tugged to the left, opposite to the way the horse beside her went. Anxious, I dance in place, wanting to get out of this human-scented place. I gulp down the musty trailer air through my nose and it fills my lungs with the scent of horses, hay and humans.
Suddenly, the wall that was before me pops open, a small, box shape window appearing. Being curiously stupid, I poke my nose through. Having just enough space for my head, I squeeze all the way through, only to be met by the eyes of a human. Scared, I thrash my head back. I smash my forehead, just above my left eye, and scrape my nose along the top. It closes quickly, the light retreating and disappearing. My nose and eye throb as Thunder sniffs my nose cautiously. His nose accidentally knocks mine and I squeal in pain. Hearing small footsteps, I turn my head to the ramp, seeing a very small... human? It stops, the sun shining behind it's back. It blinds me and just as I go to look away, it bolts forwards, jumping on my back, then off again. It jumps on Thunder's back as well and keeps going. With my heart beating a million hoofbeats at a time, the small human returns. It jumps on my back, slipping it's short legs on each side on my back and grasping my mane. Angry, I grunt with my harsh kick against the wall. Restricted in the tight space, I snort in frustration. I feel it's hands along my belly and I rear up, snapping the lead and breaking free of the shadowy trailer. I gallop to the right, the small creature hanging on to my neck. I toss my head up, and the human is thrown from my back. I spot a barn that seems empty and forget to think, charging into the tall shelter. My head is saying;
" No, no, no!" But me heart and instincts are telling me to flee. I barge into the barn, finding it full of humans. Terrified, I charge into a stall. Stupid. I run through the opening and find it fenced in with barbed wire. Knowing the consequences if I run through it, I turn, loping back. I hear a loud bang! No, I can't be stuck here. I return to the stall to find humans staring at me, and the door locked. Terrified, I whinny, rearing up and smashing down onto the floor. I feel a warm drip of blood run down my face and fall of my nose, staining a piece of straw. They disappear and moments later, I stick my head out, watching them retreat from the barn, except for the two standing across from me. The same small human, next to a woman.
" That's the mare I hopped on. I just wanted to feel her belly, like I did with Sailor." He mutters. The woman grabs hold of his one hand and bends down.
" Nick, she's wild. Sailor is not. Plus, I don't think any wild mare would let a human touch her belly at her stage." Stage? What does that mean?
" And, Sailor is older. She was very calm and tame when she was pregnant." Pregnant. I know that word. I bend my neck and touch my side, my long, warm coat tickling my nose. I have noticed my belly getting bigger, but never actually thought that I was in foal!
Stunned, I barely notice that they have walked away. Hearing their receding footsteps, I calm down. Poking my head far out of the stall, I nicker. A couple of horses pop their heads out, the one beside me stretching out it's nose. I sniff it and the smell of a stallion fills my nostrils. I squeal at the familiar stallion, this is the one that was next to Scarlet! He squeals as well, stamping his hoof against the stall. Suddenly, I hear quite a ruckus coming from the trailer. Whinnies, loud thumping noises and yelling. But not two minutes later, Thunder walks out, as cool as a spring creek. I let out a whicker, pawing my stall door. His ears are drooped, and his eyes rest barely open. He stumbles over his own hooves as they turn into the empty stall across from me. He walks in a daze, turning and nearly toppling over on the human leading him. Why was he so calm? He is more dangerous than I am, and yet he is as tame as Sailor. The human walks away, locking his stall door. He walks away, rope in hand.
" Thunder!" I whinny. He turns around, lips loose and his ears slanted opposite directions. He closes his eyes and drops is head on the door, falling asleep. I hear a small crack and he drops down onto the straw. Surprised, I pace the door, my chest dragging against it. I snort, watching another stallion get led into the barn. The recognizable chestnut pulls away from the human and rushes up to my stall. I back away quickly and his chest thumps against my stall door, his head stretched out to sniff me. The human comes from beside him, tugging him away.
The sky soon swirls from an indigo to a dark purple, the snow glittering like my mothers blue eye. Laying down on the warm straw, I stretch my head out and let out a sigh, closing my eyes and falling asleep, escaping my exhaustion and resting.
