I work part time at a small coffee shop in town three days a week in the afternoons. I have been working there for two years. I love it so much that I'll be disappointed when summer ends - I won't be working here anymore once I go off to college.
Keegan often stops by the coffee shop to see me at work. She's there this afternoon. She stands at the counter, sipping her iced chocolate, talking to me as I serve customers.
"So are you hanging out with Kyle after work?" she asks.
I pour hot water into a cup. "I don't know. I might head home once I finish up here. Besides, I will be able to see him at school tomorrow. It's no big deal if I don't see him tonight."
"Why wait tomorrow when you see him tonight?"
I added the milk into the coffee next. "Even if I can see him tonight, it will only be a short time. You know how my parents feel about me staying out late."
"You should talk your parents into extending your curfew. You're like the only person in our grade who can't stay out past eight thirty."
I grab a lid and put it on the coffee cup. "I'm sure there are other people whose parents are strict and don't allow them to be out past eight thirty, Keegan. I can't be the only one."
I excuse Keegan for a second and call out the order I had. A woman in her forties steps forward. I hand her the coffee with a smile. She thanks me and leaves. I start the next order.
"You're eighteen, MK," Keegan continues as if we weren't interrupted. "You need to get your parents to realise you aren't a kid anymore."
I sigh, reading the order for my next customer and grab a large cup for their coffee. Sometimes I wonder if Keegan or Kyle will ever accept my parents' rules. I don't always like the rules they set for me, but I have to respect why they set them. "I don't need to talk about anything to my parents, Keegan. Besides, I get extra study time when I'm not out." I add the coffee beans into the machine.
"You're already a straight-A student, MK. I'm sure you can take a break from studying every once in awhile and have some fun. You know, do things a normal teenager would do. A normal one does not sit all day in their room to study."
I pour hot water into the cup. "I enjoy studying."
"How can you enjoy studying? I get bored the moment I open my textbook."
I pour the milk in next. "Look, I know I'm weird but I really do enjoy studying. By the way, I forgot to ask you before. How did you go in the test?"
"I did well. It was fairly easy questions."
I smile at her, reaching for a lid. "That's good to know." I place the lid on the cup. I call out the name of the person who made the order and a teenage boy steps forward. He thanks me and leaves.
I glance over at the door when the bell above it jingles as the teenage boy I had just served leaves, and another customer walks in. I recognise who it is straight away, and I'm sure at that moment my heart stops beating. Jordan is walking over to the counter. He hasn't seen me yet and I'm glad he hasn't. I'm thankful my co-worker, Rose, is dealing with the register today. All I have to do is make the beverages.
"MK, do you mind taking over for a second?" Rose interrupts my thoughts.
I silently scream in my head. I couldn't deal with Jordan right now. Without arguing, I nod. She walks off to the back of the shop and I stand at the register. I wait for Jordan to approach me where he stares at the menu to decide what he wanted. Why did I speak too soon about my co-worker working on the register?
