As I exited the coffee shop where I met the boy who's name I still didn't know, i had an idea.
I ran wildly back through the door, gathered up the boy's papers and placed them neatly into his bag, put it over my shoulder and dragged him by the arm out the door. He still had his glasses in his hand.
"Do you mind sharing where we're going?" I can hear the smile in his voice.
"Do you believe in being spontaneous?" I challenge him. I stop walking, hand still on his arm and raise an eyebrow.
"On some level, yes"
"Then let's go."
And we run down the pavement, splashing in the puddles. As we come close to the coffee shop that seemed so familiar to me before, I realise there's nothing really special about it. I guess it's the same with people, I mean we all have somebody who we only have to see or hear their name and our heart skips a beat. There might not be anything special about them in plain sight, but if you look closely, look through the cracks and you'll see something truly special.
But the cracks had been sealed over for me now, sacrifices have to be made. I met a boy who changed me forever, and I took a step back and lost the magic.
Now, me and this boy stand here, staring at the door.
I get it for him, and he walks through, taking it in. The fire place on the wall, the marble countertops, steel benches, soft chairs. And this time, I sit at a table. I stare across the room at the couch, how familiar yet so unknown. I reach for the book in my pocket, and I pull it out, staring at the cover. And I read it. I sit here in silence and I read the book up to the last five pages.
I read it a completely different way, it makes sense in the strangest of ways but i stop myself before I can finish it.
I put the book down, still open with the cover up.
"Aren't you going to finish it?" Asks the boy.
"No", I say, "it's too early for ending."
And I toss the book into the fire.
