They tell me Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East.
And that this is what we should all strive to be.
So I ask this.
When a man peacefully protests for equality
Only to be choked by his Kuffiyeh,
Arrested and thrown into jail without a trail
He can't see his family or explain why to his child.
Is this a Democracy?
When a little boy walks out to buy bread,
Turns around and gets shot in the head.
Is this a democracy?
When a woman comes home from the mosque,
Praying her family is okay
Finds her son in jail, her husband crying on the floor,
Tear gas burning his face!
Is this a democracy???
When a two year old watches her father being beat to death,
Instead of the mercy of a bullet to the heart,
He's bleeding, barely breathing
And she's screaming
'Daddy! Please! Don't leave me!'
Is this a democracy?!
When the Dead Sea is no longer filled with salt.
But with tears of children!
When bombs are more common than smiles!
IS THIS A DEMOCRACY?
Is this the democracy that tears apart my legacy, that destroys my family, that sheds my blood, that took my home and eradicated my ancestry?
If this is a democracy.
Then it's the LAST thing we need to be.
