"Have you got your wand?"
I rolled my eyes and nodded, watching Naomi fiddle with my robes, which she insisted I wear, and check me over for the thousandth time.
"Hats?"
Nod.
"Scarves?"
I nodded harder, gently pushing her hands away from me and giving her an exasperated look. She sighed and stepped back.
"I'm sorry. You know I worry." She said, wrapping her arms around herself, "I just want to make sure I've done everything I can for you. At least for now."
I gave her a small smile just as the train whistled, causing Naomi to jump and go back into hysterics.
"Alright, you have everything? Right right, sorry.. Have fun, make friends, and don't worry about houses." She said quickly, hugging me, then holding my shoulders at arms length, "Write to me, there will be owls for you to use if you'd like."
I nodded and turned to board the train. My luggage had already been taken, so I only had to carry a small shoulder bag with my wand, a few books, and some snacks.
After walking around the train for a few minutes I finally found an empty compartment. I threw my bag and myself down onto the cushioned seat, glancing out of the window to find Naomi standing awkwardly in the crowd.
I felt bad seeing her with her arms wrapped around herself, alone, until a short woman with curly red hair came up to her. Naomi turned and grinned widely, hugging the woman as both of them started a very happy conversation."Well look who it is." An unfortunately familiar voice sounded from the compartment doorway.
Draco leaned against the door with his two friends from Malkin's just behind him. I frowned, pulling my bag closer to me and hoping that he would just leave me alone. Of course I knew that was unrealistic, but when he told the two boys to go to their own compartment, I was surprised. I was even more surprised when he closed the door behind him and sat directly across from me. The train let out a final whistle and lurched forward. I looked out the window and watched the parents wave at us, all smiling, before turning back to Draco. He didn't say anything for a moment, just looked at me, so I stared back at him while subconsciously leaning as far away as possible, pressing myself into my seat.
After a few moments he said, "How are you going to participate in school if you don't talk?"
I frowned, holding his gaze for a minute before pulling a small notebook and a pen out of my bag. Draco continued to watch me as I wrote.
I can still hear, obviously. I just have to listen to the teachers, read, and complete assignments, just like everyone else.
"Yeah, well how will you preform spells?" He asked, passing the book back.
Wordless magic. I've been learning about it for a while and Naomi told me that Dumbledore already had arrangements for me to be given extra help.
He read over my note and nodded to himself, then looked up at me and said, "So your mum, she's in St. Mungo's, right?"
I shrank back at the mention of my mom, moving my eyes away from his and tilting my head down. He didn't say much else for a while, but a moment later I felt my notebook slowly slide back into my hands, stopping my fingers from scratching at each other, a habit of mine when I got nervous. I glanced up to find him leaning back carelessly in his seat, looking out the window as if he were bored. Just as he turned to say something, the trolley wheeled to a stop outside the compartment. I hopped up and opened the door. The woman smiled and handed me the Licorice Wands and Every Flavoured Beans I had pointed out. I looked back at Draco, but he didn't seem to want anything, so I waved goodbye and sat back down. After few a few quiet moments, the only sound being me opening the box of Every Flavoured Beans and the train moving, Draco spoke up again.
