What happens to your heart when you fall in love with your best friend? You can’t tell them because it will destroy everything. It’ll make things seem awkward and weird, so what happens to your heart when you secretly love someone that you can’t have or tell that you’re in love with them? Well I was able to find out, it hurts and it ruins your life. You’re in a constant battle of is he flirting with me or is he just being him.

It’s annoying but you learn to deal, well sort of. Dylan’s mum and my mum were best friends their whole lives and when I was born, Dylan became my best friend. He is a year older than me but it didn’t matter, we were always there for each other. Through anything; it didn’t matter what it was. But because he was a year older he got to go to school a year early and go on all the rides at Dream World before me. I still didn’t care because at least I still had my best friend.

Only thing is, he wasn’t a best friend to me anymore, somewhere around the age of ten and twelve is when I decided my future. Dylan and I will marry and become the perfect couple; have three kids and everyone will say to us, we knew you guys would marry all along. Only thing about my future is, I would never let anyone in on it.

So my earliest memory of Dylan and I goes like this.

‘Alex hurry up,’ he said with a cheeky grin as he ran past me. His dark black hair moved the way he moved and his smile changed as I ran after him.

‘I am,’ I shout back looking at him. That’s when I fell over, and that’s why his smile changed. I fell and broke my leg because I didn’t see the log in front of me.

Dylan ran towards me with worry in his eye as I screamed in pain, ‘Alex, what can I do?’

I continued to cry and let him hug me. There was nothing he could do; he was only 11 at the time. That was the moment I first fell in love with me. Because of that moment when I couldn’t walk he held me there and then picked me up and carried me home.

For the next week although I had crutches, he would walk around the house getting me books to read, movies to watch ad made food for me to eat. It was so sweet and innocent that it made me want more and made me believe I had fallen hard for him.  I talked to my other friends about it at school and they all smiled and said, ‘I knew it all along.’

So that’s when my day dream of Dylan and I marrying had begun.

I’m now fifteen going on sixteen and he still doesn’t know I like him. Sure enough he can see I get jealous when he has a new girlfriend but he just says, ‘Don’t worry Alex; no-one can replace the friendship we have.’ So I’ve been friend zoned for the rest of my life!!
