Chapter 2
For the first couple of kills I followed close behind Nik, taking his cues and lead before I believed that I had the hunt down. Wandering over to a little pond I saw I plopped down on its back, feeling Nik settle in beside me. Our breaths weren't labored, even though we had been running around all day and it sent a thrill through me to know we could run forever without needing a single breath.
"Don't tell me your tired already, Ash." I shook my head at him and gave him a sly smile.
"When hell freezes over."
"So you ready to give it a try? I'll stay back and not interfere unless you need me." Rolling my eyes at him I stood. Like I needed a damn man to protect me.
I cleared my mind and slowly inhaled. I scrunched my nose up as two scents infiltrated my senses and tried to decide which one to follow. One was a deep woodsy smell, and the other was a soft delicate scent. The female was closer and would put up less of a fight so I bunched up my muscles and sprang in the direction of my target. My blood was rushing in my body, electric and alive, and I felt as if I were returning to something I knew. Sort of like a déjà vu in full force. Maybe that's what stopped me from attacking as I curiously stared at a man and a woman who were happily absorbed in their own little world, and I had a feeling of shock run through me.
I knew these people.
I don't know how or why I think I might know them, but my mind was working furiously to try and piece together who these strangers were. It was strange, if what Nik had been telling me was right than what I'm feeling towards these strangers, mainly the girl, I should be feeling towards him. The sense of knowing someone and recognizing them. But I don't. I had the weirdest urge to storm up to the happy, and by the looks of it recently engaged, couple and demand if they knew me. I shook my head knowing that would be impossible, and out of the corner of my eye I saw Nik crouching on the opposite side of the clearing, being quite clumsy for a vampire, and getting the attention of the male.
The man's head whipped towards Nik and he sniffed the air, probably smelling Nik's strong cologne. Nostrils flaring he muttered something like, 'stay here' to the girl and ran over to Nik, who was already running away. What a wimp. Shaking my head again I stepped closer to the girl, letting my newfound hunting tools take over me. I was no longer Ms. Nice Vampire. I was a shark in the water, sniffing out my prey by her blood. whose scent was infiltrating my senses, but when I tried to move to attack her, my body stopped. A line from my favorite movie came to me.
Fish are friends, not food.
Well, it was fitting for the situation. Wait, I just remembered something from my past! A memory came to me of laying down in front of a TV with this girl, what was her name?, watching the movie. The movie's name is...Finding Nemo! Yeah that's right! It was about a lost little fish and his dad coming to find him. Maybe my dad is looking for me, would that make me Nemo? Nema? For some reason I don't think my father is looking for me.
I shook my head- yet again, geesh- and narrowed my eyes at her. She turned and stared at me, and shock took over her face.
"Emma?" My body jolted at the name. It felt so right, like I was coming home. I was supposed to be called Emma, by this small beautiful girl. My name was not Ashlynn, no wonder I had been feeling so lost being called that. I wanted, no needed, answers. By the look on this girl's face she was about ready to faint, so I needed to go to the next best source. Nik.
I turned and ran to the house, using my full powers I reached the house in no time. I barged through the door and ignored as it flew to the opposite side and cracked the wall. I sniffed out my target and came to find him in the living room with Dixon and another man I didn't know. I could care less. The men, who were laughing and sharing a joke about something, turned to me and waited. I walked to Nik before slapping him.
"Explain."
