Every story has the day everything changes for the character. Whether it be the day they get a letter, the day they save a life or the day the world ends; a story must start on a special day.
The day my life was changed was already special in my heart, today was the day I would finally turn eighteen, become an adult and leave school to start my life. I had planned it for months in my head, there would be a my party with the few friends I had and later that night, my father who had left my mother and I when I was little kid; would take me out on my annual birthday trip.
I never spoke to my father much. He had a busy important job that took up most of his time, I used to joke with my mother that he was some super secret international spy that had saved the world hundreds of times.
But she would just force a laugh and smile at me giving my head a small pat accompanied by the words, "Don't be so silly Rose, now go play with your toys".
I knew something was wrong with my fathers job, but being so young, I never pursued the question further.
On the night of my birthday, my father surprised me by taking me to see a real live acting out of 'Macbeth' in the Melbourne Forum Center. My passion lay in acting and drama so I could never have asked for a more perfect surprise than the one he gave me.
After the play we walked back to his car which he had parked in the muti-level car park near by. We crossed through the colourfully graffiti cobble-stone back streets to reach the building, and I dragged my father along as I insistently talked about the play.
"I just can't believe how amazing it was though! The actress who played Lady Macbeth got her character's depth so well! Her scheming, coy self as she moved the pawns of her chess game to get her husband to the top and then be able to switch to her alter-ego self where her sorrow and self-hatred for all the blood that has come at her hands comes out to show itself. What did you think of her?" I chirped to my father feeling light headed as I gasped for air walking up the hill.
He just grunted as his deep golden eyes scanned around us. "Yeah, she was a good actress, pretty to." he commented as if he barely heard the words I spoke.
I just sighed with a roll of my eyes. He never listened to me, even as a child the most I would get was a grunt and an airy comment. Then he'd just go back into his "office" and not come out till after I was asleep.
But I would always wake ever so slightly from my slumber to feel him kiss my forehead and tuck me in with a few kind words.
Now though, he seemed more distant than ever before. The golden eyes he and I shared kept looking around us as though he expected something to jump out and attack him.
Or someone.
And that's my moment. The moment it all changed for me. The moment that allowed me my future, the moment that showed me the past.
The moment I realised who I am meant to be.
