Chapter Four

A funeral for the four boys took place a week later. Of course, that's when Wendy decided to strike.

The day before, she had bought a bag of Belladonna berries from her supplier, and spent the night making them into a sweet jam. The day of the funeral, while the cooks were preparing jam tarts, she stole one and filled it with her evil mixture. It would taste like a regular tart, if a bit sweet, but Peter wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

At least not until it was much too late.

It may seem a bit morbid, poisoning somebody at their friend's funeral, but keep in mind that Wendy is an unfeeling robot, bent on destroying Peter. His death was the only thing that could make her happy.

Well, as happy as an unfeeling robot could be.

That day at the funeral reception, Peter was inconsolable. He wasn't used to death, he and his friends thought that they'd be young forever. He had even once said that he would prefer to be murdered over dying peacefully, because at least that would be an adventure. Well, if Wendy had her way, he would get his wish.

It started normal, with the parents all crying together, and the three final boys huddled together in a corner by the refreshments table. Wendy was dressed completely in black, and her elaborate makeup made her hard to recognise. She had even smudged her eye makeup to appear as though she had been crying, which would also make her unrecognisable even to Edward.

Wendy inched along the wall, getting closer and closer to the boys, and more importantly, the table. She discreetly took the poisonous tart out of her purse, and put it onto a tray of nearly identical ones.

Next she grabbed the tray, and offered it to the boys, sobbed about the tragedy, then said that food would be a comfort to them.

To make sure that Peter got the right one she even handed it directly to him, a risky move, but one that should have worked.

It would have. But there was one tiny little problem that she didn't expect.

Peter couldn't eat because he was too upset about his friends' deaths. While Wendy was walking away to avoid suspicion, Peter put the tart down beside him and forgot all about it.

You're probably cheering right now, happy that Wendy's plan failed and nobody was hurt. Unfortunately, there's more to the story.

One of Peter's remaining two friends was very hungry. Since there wasn't much food at the reception except for small pastries, the boy had been gorging himself on all of the jam tarts he could. When he saw Peter put down his poisonous desert, the boy had to have it. He shoved the whole thing down his throat, barely chewing.

When Wendy got far enough away to avoid suspicion, she looked back and was pleased to see that the tart was gone. She smiled a horrible smile, and walked right out of the funeral, sure that her goal had been accomplished.

She wondered what the other doll was doing, and thought about how to find her. Wendy was excited to meet her, and work together to kill. Imagine the destruction they could cause, the mayhem that they could unleash, the people they could kill.

Together.

Obviously Wendy never learned the expression "Don't count your eggs until they hatch". While she was celebrating her success, Peter was still perfectly alive and healthy. His friend, on the other hand, wasn't doing so well.

The boy had been complaining of a headache on the way home, and a very dry mouth. His parents chalked it up to grief, but it was much more sinister than that.

During the night, he started having convulsions, then died before his parents could get him to the hospital.

Wendy discovered the news the next day, while reading the obituaries for fun. She couldn't believe that her plan had been foiled yet again. As soon as she found out, she started formulating a new plan to kill Peter once and for all.

And this time, it would work.

While she was plotting evilly, the police were trying their hardest to find the killer. They had already checked everyone who might have had a grudge against the boys or their parents, and nobody was capable of committing all five murders. They each had foolproof alibis for all of the murders.

The police and detectives assigned to the case had gone back to their original list of suspects, which included Wendy. When they thought about it, Wendy did not have a clear alibi for any of the five deaths. Although she didn't have any reason or way to kill the boys (they thought), they decided it would be best to bring her in for questioning again.

They had no more evidence against her than when they started the investigation though, so they released her again. Of course, they thought that it would be best if they kept a close watch on her to be sure, so they sent a detective disguised as a maid to follow Wendy around under the guise of learning how to do the chores.

Wendy saw through this plan immediately because nobody in their right mind would want her teaching someone to do chores as she wasn't very good at them herself. She needed to get away.

Wendy acted completely normal all day. She showed the fake maid how to do all the chores, then pretended not to notice when the detective kept finding excuses to be near her. All seemed fine, and nobody was suspicious.

They should have been.

While Wendy looked like the perfect little robotic maid on the outside, if you could see inside her head, you would be horrified. Terrified. Petrified. Her mind was so full of murderous schemes and homicidal thoughts that she hardly seemed human.

Oh.

After dinner that night, all the maids gathered in the kitchen for a cup of tea and some gossip before going to bed, as usual. Wendy volunteered to make the tea that night, and was very careful about who got which mug.

In the mug for the fake maid was a very powerful sedative. It would take about an hour to kick in, but once it did, it would be impossible for the 'maid' to stay awake.

The detective drank all of it, leaving not a single drop. Wendy made sure to wash out all the mugs as well, it wouldn't do if anyone discovered her trickery.

That night, Wendy pretended to go on sleep mode, and the detective pretended to sleep while keeping an eye on her. Eventually, though, she couldn't keep her eyes open any longer.

Then Wendy struck.
