Chapter Two

When I returned home that afternoon, I returned to an empty house. My mom was still at work so it was just me for the next few hours. In case you haven't figured it out, I don't have a dad. My mom doesn't like to talk about him, all I know is that he left before I was even born. I've never heard from him or met in person. I'm assuming it's him I get my powers from, since most people inherit their powers from one parent or the other. The lucky ones get a power from each parent.

Since I don't have a dad and my mom was working I was used to coming home to be by myself. Today was no different, I got off the bus, walked to my house and unlocked the door, and walked in. Since it was only me and my mom we lived in a pretty small house, despite it being two stories tall. Even if it was small, it wasn't terrible, and I suppose we don't exactly need much more.

I headed upstairs to my room and dropped my bag on the floor by the door, going and flopping down on my bed. I spent a while staring at my ceiling before finally dragging myself up and going back downstairs to make myself some dinner. While I did so I turned on the t.v. so that I would have something to listen to while I cooked.

Now, as you know it's normal for people to have powers. I'm assuming we all know what comes with superpowers- super villains and heroes. That's what makes watching the news actually interesting to a sixteen year old like myself, especially since I live in a big city. Every day there's another robbery or bomb threat or just some sort of crime downtown, and of course everyday there's some hero showing up to stop them. I heard there's apparently some specific organization just for heroes. Of course, I don't know how true that is.

By the time I'd finished cooking and went to sit down and eat in the living room there was something else going on. Apparently someone had set a building on fire and it was looking pretty serious. So far it looked like nobody even knew what or who could've started the fire. I watched for a few minutes longer before losing interest and changing the channel.

The next day when I returned home I found my mom had left me a note on the table, asking me to pick up some specific groceries for her. She'd left some money with the note so I pocketed the money and dropped my bag before once again leaving the house. It was a pretty nice day, it was early October now so the air was cool and made the twenty minute walk to the store bearable. I know I've said my house is decent, but I don't necessarily live in the nicest area. Sometimes I wondered how much my mom worried about my safety, sending her five foot seven, scrawny, supposedly powerless son off by himself for errands all the time. I can't even begin to count how many times I've walked by some guy using drugs in an allyway, or stopped to watch a fight between a couple of drunks. Hell, one time I saw two guys leave from robbing a store right before I walked into it.

Thankfully nothing like that happened along the way, and I went in and got what was needed before leaving. I only got to enjoy about five peaceful minutes of my walk back when I was suddenly knocked over. It happened pretty so I was a bit freaked out and disoriented. I looked to see what had slammed into me and saw another person beside me on the ground. I couldn't really see his face, he was wearing a black hoodie and had the hood pulled up, and even without that his eyes were mostly hidden by his hair.

"Thanks, I'm fine." I said sarcastically as I started to pick up the stuff I'd dropped. He didn't answer, as he got up he seemed distracted on looking back at where he'd come from. "Were you bein' chased by something?" I asked him. Still no answer from him. I got my answer when I saw he had in fact been being chased after by a couple of guys who looked like they could kill me with their bare hands. On one hand I wanted to go home. On the other hand this skinny kid was probably about to get murdered in front of me and I kind of wanted to watch that go down. Before they could each us the boy turned to look at me.

"You wouldn't  happen to have some way to maybe protect me, right?" He asked. I couldn't help but notice his voice sounded pretty familiar.

"I mean... I do, but why should I?" I asked, slowly starting to put down the bags in case he came up with a good enough reason.

"We don't have time for reasons, just do it!" He snapped. I decided it couldn't be that bad if I did it so I put my hands out in front of me, creating a decent sized force field around us. It was a good thing I did it too, the two men had reached us just as I did. They looked pretty frustrated when they smacked into it and then they began angrily banging on it. They kind of reminded me of angry animals.

"What did you even do?!" I asked him. I wasn't sure how long I'd be able to keep it up and I definitely didn't want these guys to turn on me when it went down.

"/I/ didn't do anything!"

"Yeah, for some reason I don't really believe that." I said sarcastically, rolling my eyes.

"Fine, believe whatever you want, it doesn't matter to me." He said. We had to wait it out for a short while longer before they left, after letting him know they'd find him later. I waited till they were out of sight before lowering in the force field. I looked up at him now, and he seemed pretty relieved.

"So... now that they aren't at your throat, what did you do?" I asked him again.

"I  already told you, I didn't do anything!" He snapped.

"Then why were they chasing you?" I crossed my arms.

"Look, someone I know made them mad,. so they took it out on me. It's not my fault. He sure sounded like he meant it, so I decided to believe him.

"Ok. You sound familiar, what's your name?" I asked.

"... Jett." he said after a few moments hesitation. "We have a science class together."

"Oh... oh! You're that angry looking kid who sits next to me!"

"Yeah- what?! I'm not angry looking." He said, looking pretty angry about that.

"You sure seem angry." I pointed out, and he groaned in response. i started picking up my bags and held a couple out to him. "I helped you, now you help me. I had to use much needed energy to protect you." I told him. He didn't look happy about it but he took the bags from me anyway. I started walking to my house and he followed beside me.

"So... what's your name?" He asked after being quiet for a while.

"It's Winter." I told him.

"Um... no, it's fall." He said. I couldn't help but laugh.

"No, my name is Winter."

"Oh. That makes more sense." He said, looking away from me. "Were you born in the winter or something."

"I was but I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it." I shrugged. When we arrived at my house I opened the door and directed him to the kitchen. Once we were in there and set everything down I thanked him for helping me carry it all home.

"No problem." He said. "Can I leave now?"

"Yeah, go ahead. I guess I'll see you in class tomorrow." I told him. I don't think he heard me because he was already almost at the door. I decided to just jeep quiet and let him go. Not only had I used up energy making the force field but my skinny arms weren't made to carry so much stuff so I decided to take a well earned rest.

(A/N: this shouldn't have taken so long but I was either sick or busy whoops)
