The next day Jett was supposed to come to my house again, but when I heard a knock at the door and opened it, he wasn't there. Instead, two tall, scary men dressed in black were standing there.
"Uhh... can I help you...? I asked, a little worried.
"Are you Winter Lee?" One of them asked. I nodded.
"Yeah... I am... why?" I crossed my arms.
"We need to talk to you, so we need you to come with us." The other said.
"No." I said right away. "I'm not fixing to go with some people I don't know. Even if you do look pretty official. Either you talk to me here or not at all."
"I'm afraid we can't do that, we have to take you with us." He reached for my arm and I stepped back.
"Tell me what you wanna talk about and maybe I'll go." I said. They gave each other a look before one of them sighed.
"It's about your powers, Mr.Lee." He said. I was a bit shocked, but I guessed that was a good enough reason for me and I started to get my shoes on. I stepped out and locked the door before looking at them. They led me to a waiting car with extremely dark windows and got me inside. I couldn't even see the driver from the back which freaked me out more. I tried to stay calm but it was definitely uncomfortable. I had my fists clenched basically the whole ride. It got worse when I noticed just how far from town we were getting.
"Where are we going exactly...?" I asked. I didn't get a response so I took out my phone and began texting each of my friends the situation and descriptions of the men in case I never came back. The only person I didn't text was my mom, in case this all really was about my powers.
Eventually we turned down a road that lead to the gated entrance of a large gray building. It made me think of a cross between a prison and an office building. After getting past the gates the car was parked close to the front of the building and we got out. They led me inside, past many people rushing around, and into an elevator. One of them pressed a button that didn't even have a number on it and the doors closed before the elevator began descending. I tried to text my friends again and tell them what the building looked like but I had no service so I gave up.
It took almost five minutes before the elevator finally came to a halt. The doors slide open and it looked completely different from the upper levels. Leaving the elevator we stepped into a long hallway, which branched off left and right at the end before a door at the very end. There were other doors on either side and the lights in the ceiling were dim, the hallway being illuminated by pale blue lights along the walkway and the walls. They led me to the very end of the hall and knocked on the door.
"Come in!" A voice said, and one of them opened the door and gave me a slight push in and then the door was shut behind me. The room reminded me of a principal's office. There were framed documents on the walls, potted plants, and a desk in the center of the room, an empty chair in front of it and a pretty lady sitting behind it. She couldn't have been any older than thirty, and she had long dark hair, dark skin and bright blue eyes. "Winter Lee, correct?" She asked and I nodded. "Please, take a seat." She told me. I sat down in the chair in front of the desk, which was more comfortable than I expected. "Do you know where you are, or who I am?" She asked.
"No ma'am, I don't..." I told her. "All I was told was that they wanted to talk about my powers..."
"Oh, those two." She rolled her eyes. "I specifically told them to tell you everything on the way but they had to be oh so secretive." She sighed. "Well, my name is Vatinia Asellio. I'm the head of the Midvale City branch of the Avalon Assembly. We keep track of every person in the city who possesses any from of special ability, most importantly those who use them to help others. As you can imagine we are very busy people." She laughed. "Of course our people are everywhere at all times, so we've noticed you Mr. Lee. No offense, but you certainly don't look like much of a hero or anything, but you seem set on helping people in the recent fires we've been having. Your powers are very helpful, have you only begun doing this recently?" She asked.
"Yes ma'am..." I nodded, trying to let myself relax. She was nice enough, I didn't see any reason to be afraid anymore.
"There are thousands of people in this city, but none of them possess the same powers as you do, which is quite shocking really, especially with a power as basic as psychokenisis. Where did you get your powers from?" She asked.
"I was born with 'em." I told her.
"Which parent did you get them from?" She asked. I shrugged.
"I guess my father...? My mom doesn't have powers, and I never met my father so I wouldn't know..." I told her.
"Interesting... well, no matter. I suppose it's time we get to the point. Mr.Lee, do you know who the Black Flame was?" She asked. I slowly shook my head. I didn't mention it, but I had a notebook filled with the heroes and villains who frequented our town, and there was no Black Flame in there. "Fair enough. Almost eighteen years ago we had an incident like the one we are having now. A man calling himself the Black Flame was starting fires all across town, especially in apartments, hotels, anywhere many people were likely to be. There was no motive, he was simply doing it for the destruction it caused. There was another man nicknamed Psychic Storm, he had the same powers that you do, and then some." She rolled her eyes. "One of the lucky ones, he inherited both his parents powers." She explained.
"What does any of this have to do with me?" I asked her, crossing my arms.
"If you be patient I'll tell you." She said. "Now, as I was saying, Psychic Storm showed up and he was the first person to successfully capture Black Flame, and was the cause of his arrest. However he did rescue countless people, which is what's important here. You possess the same powers as he did, the important ones anyway. We need you to take his place and stop whoever is doing this." She said. I sure didn't like the sound of that.
"Why don't you just call him back? If his old enemy is stirring up trouble why should I do his job?" I asked.
"Well, for one thing, we know for a fact that Black Flame isn't doing this. He died in prison a few years after he was arrested. As for Psychic Storm, he disappeared only about a month after this all ended. We've spent years searching for him, but nothing has turned up."
"Ok but why me? Who cares if I have the same powers as this guy, there has to be far more powerful people who are way more capable of handling him! Ma'am, I'm sorry but I can barely lift a child with my powers, and that and using force fields drains me of any energy in less than ten minutes. There's no way I'd be useful."
"You have no reason to worry, we would train you before sending you out to do anything dangerous." She said. "Besides, at this moment we are attempting to get into the Obsidian Order- which is more or less the same thing as us, but for villains- to see if we can even find a name of the person whose doing this. We think you're best suited for the job because you're new, if anyone has attempted attacks on him before you'll be something he doesn't expect."
"Even if I did agree and I allowed you to train me and put me up against him, what am I supposed to do in the mean time? So far the only reason people have avoided dying is because I've been there to help, I don't want to just take time off and return to find people have been dying in these fires." I shook my head and started to stand up. "I'm real sorry but I can't do this." I told her. She sighed, leaning back in her chair and opening a drawer in her desk.
"It's fine, I cannot force you to do something you don't wish to. If you do change your mind though, please, give us a call." She said, handing me a card. I took it from her, sticking it in my jacket pocket.
"Alright, I will... again, I'm sorry." I said before turning and leaving the room. I was escorted by the same two men back upstairs and to the car outside, which promptly drove me home.
