Little yaps could be heard from the darkened street as the pups grew older with each of the days that passed by.
The small puppies hadn't even learned to walk but bond always looked out from the alleyway's entrance and yearned to explore again but was tied to the responsibility of keeping the puppies safe. But it was so hard for her to keep doing so. All these tiny beings had ever known was the rubbish that was where they were to live for the time being. The weather wasn't getting any better either. The frozen bitterness of the winds became colder with every moving minute of the days. It wasn't even half way through winter and it was already unbearably cold. The snowflakes had began to fall on New Year's Day but they were relentless. The skies knew no limits and with that it poured down all it had and the snow began to pile up inch by inch.
The puppies could feel the snow landing on their still tiny noses but could not see it as they were not able to see the world yet. The snow was gentle to the touch since it landed so easily and gently and could barely be felt but what made it able to feel was the bitter cold of it.
The mother husky kept the puppies on top of one of the blankets that the cafe had given in the way back of the corner of what shouldn't be called home to such a young family and at night she would lie next to them and have them as close as possible to keep them as warm as she possibly could. She would always have to go scavenge for food when the cafe hadn't given her food on days it was closed. She should've been using that time with her little dogs but if she wanted to try keep herself alive and the puppies she would have to sacrifice as much as she could. Her sacrifices weren't enough though.
After the owners of the cosy coffee had discovered the beautiful little souls that were living on the streets it was already too late by then. It was too cold, too little food and too little water to keep all the puppies going and the mum as well. One by one the puppies began to slip away from the face of the earth. They weren't strong enough to keep themselves going.
On January 3rd 2014 two of the little pups went in their sleeps as victims of puppy fade. Most of the other puppies were to meet the very same fate.
On January 5th another two went away in the middle of the afternoon. No one stopped to see the 2 remaining puppies, the bodies of the fallen four and the grieving mother that stood over the dogs that no longer breathed, no longer moved their tiny bodies and no longer cried when they wanted food. They were silent. As silent as the passing nights.
Finally, in the late morning of the 8th January one more died. It's cries became quieter as the minutes passed by. Bond had noticed the changes in the little pup. The breathing of the innocent being began to slow as it slowly gave up on the cruel world. It's paws began to stop moving. And as only a few more minutes had passed by the last pup that died went away gently.
Only one of the six remained now. It was the one that was born last. You would have expected that since it was born last that it would've died first. But no the small soul decided to not give in just yet. To keep pushing on and not give up just yet. With every bit of its tiny body they pushed on. This little puppy was the final remaining girl. Her brothers and sisters passed away but she kept going on.
Bond knew that she was only with one puppy in life and the five of the other were in death and had crossed the rainbow bridge into the other side. They were so young as well. Bond knew that she couldn't give up on her final living puppy.
After the cafe had noticed this they buried the puppies that were in death and gave the mother and the daughter more food, more water and more blankets for warmth. They would've taken the young puppy inside but bond objected as she growled and Bared her teeth at them. They left the side door open on those bitter cold nights though so they could be warm, have food and water with a warm place to sleep in.
Before they knew how long it had actually been, the flowers had already began to bloom once again. Spring had once again finally sprung. The days were getting longer and the nights were getting shorter. It was already getting warmer and the mother and the daughter no longer needed to go inside the back of the cafe to keep warm at night.
Not only were the days growing but so was the daughter of the mother husky who had been rightly named midnight, by the owners of the cafe as, she was completely covered in jet black fur as dark as the witching hour. She was already able to walk and run. Her eyes were a piercing blue that were as icy as ice itself but gentle as a toy bear. Her tail was bushy with a white tinge at the end of it. Her ears were always perked up listening for the little sounds of a twig breaking to the loud noises of the chatter amongst the bustling streets of the roaring cars that passed by everyday.
She learned so fast. She would watch her mom's every move and try to recreate it herself. She learnt to escape un-wanted situations just like her mother. She learnt to scavenge for food and what to eat and what not to eat. The pup was now 4 months old but acted like she was at least a year old.
One fatal day midnight had woken up to the sound of the cars driving past. The sun had risen up now and sun rise was long gone by then. Bond was searching for food within the alleyway. The keen eyed mum looked across the streets and had seen some people had dropped some food. But it wasn't just some. No it was almost two entire handfuls worth of food was jack pot for her.
The older dog now knew what she wanted and would get it what ever she wanted. The brave dog stepped out into the street were people walked past and shoved past her.
She began to try to walk across the street. She had failed to hear the frantic screeches of the horn at first. She had turned to the sound seconds later and was met with the face of a giant truck meters away that was trying to slow down. before having time to react she was struck down by the large vehicle.
The truck had come to a halt after hitting the poor thing. The driver jumped out the truck and looked at what he had done. Bond lying helplessly on the ground in a pool of her own blood. She had been killed instantly on impact. There was no saving the dog now unless someone magically had a potion to bring the dead back. Her once white patch that laid upon her chest was stained a deep crimson red.
Midnight looked between the people that had surrounded the dog. She hAd seen the unseeable and backed off back into the darkness of the alley way to hide. Her mother had gone to join her brothers and sisters on the other side of the rainbow bridge and now?
Well now she was all alone.
