As Lucy turned around she felt another slap across her face. Each slap hurt more than the first. She started to run out the door past Hailey, but Hailey grabbed her across the shoulders and slammed her against her bed frame.
Hailey was her dad's girlfriend, and she had been abusing Lucy for three years now. As a 9 year-old, how was Lucy supposed to defend herself against a 42 year-old?
When Lucy's dad, Mike, first introduced Hailey to the family everybody loved her. Before her dad got home from work, and Lucy's grandparents were watching Lucy, her sister, Rebecca, and Hailey's daughter Mackenzie, Lucy remembered waiting outside until Hailey would get home from her job at the bank. When Hailey would get home Lucy wouldn't leave her side until bedtime.
About 6 months later, at the beginning of the summer, was when Hailey started to abuse Lucy. It was really easy for Hailey to abuse her since her dad was gone during the day working at the local mill. It started off with a few light slaps to the face, or a couple spankings which was normal back then since a lot of kids were spanked when bad.
It started getting serious after school had been out for three and a half weeks. Hailey would pull Lucy's hair out if she didn't give Mackenzie her
doll-even though Mackenzie had more dolls than Lucy or Rebecca ever had. Hailey would also make Lucy stay home with her middle son, Eli, while she took Mackenzie and Rebecca to ice cream with Hailey's oldest son, Robert.
Lucy believed that Hailey was just jealous since her and Rebecca were prettier than Mackenzie would ever be. Lucy had hair blonder than Carrie Underwood's, and eyes that were bluer than the ocean. Lucy had her mom's heart-shaped face, and her long legs. At age six Lucy was the tallest in her class, but that only lasted up through the 5th grade when her sudden growth spurt stopped. Rebecca, who was eleven months younger than Lucy, was the spitting image of her older sister.
Their entire life, Rebecca and Lucy had strangers walking up to them asking questions like Are you twins? Whose oldest and by how much? Can you read each other's minds? and the one Lucy hated the most If I were to slap Lucy would you, Rebecca be able to feel it? From experience they knew that no, Rebecca could not feel a punch, but they could tell what the other was thinking. Sometimes.
Rebecca looked exactly like Lucy except Rebecca's eyes were a lighter blue, slowly becoming gray as they got older, and their face shapes were different. Rebecca had a round face that matched her dad's down to the dimple they both had on the left cheek. Lucy and Rebecca were both beautiful, little girls, but until
Mackenzie got older all of their family, and friends considered Mackenzie, the ugly duck.
Mackenzie had a very square face with a very manly jaw line. Her hair was a dark brown, but with the frequent highlights Hailey had put into her hair, most of the family considered it 'the color of cat shit.'
Her eyes were black, and every once-in-a-while you could barely see specks of amber floating around in the blackness looking like fire. When those few people saw the specks, those few people, were able to see through her "sweetness" and were aware of how cold her and her family were.
"Stay away from me!" Lucy screamed as she tried fighting back against Hailey. Hailey turned around, and Lucy, seeing the right moment, charged at Hailey just as she was turning around. Lucy caught a mouthful of Hailey's blonde, poofy hair. Unlike Lucy and Rebecca's hair, Hailey's hair was not natural.
"You bitch face little brat!" Hailey screamed back as Lucy knocked the air out of her, but it only lasted for a split second, since Lucy was only nine.
