Chapter 1

{Krystal's Pov}

I'm Krystal.

That's all I've been known as today.

People ask what my last name may be, I just continue to say, it has lost all meaning and holds no place for me anymore. Just like this world, of dreadful fear, and unbearable living.

What used to be so peaceful, has become the undeads. No more neighbors, no more restaurants or shopping centers, everything's gone but the remains are still standing. The dead lurk around, every place I once knew. They make everyday fearful, and.. scary. This wasn't how I planned my future to be. Killing walking corpses for a living.

My nieces, Emily and Sarah are all I have, and I will lose them to none of the flesh eaters, nor any crazy beings. My priority was and still is to keep them alive, for my sister and brother-in-law's sake.

We've survived three years of this horrible plague, with not knowing how much longer it'll last we strive for a cure or something to stop these things to happen. But, all is only in our prayers.

The day the outbreak occurred, seems like it were only yesterday, when everything went to hell and everyone I knew and loved just, died and came back.

~3 years earlier~

"Emily, Sarah just look away please" my sister, Annie pleaded as she laid in my arms.

She trembled with slight discomfort of the fresh bite, and blood that was dripping down her neck. Some.. thing had a hold of her, and took itself on her. The news reporter said there was an outbreak, but on what exactly? Fucking zombies that's what.

Who would've ever thought that an apocalypse would've ever begun? I thought things like this only existed in movies, but I thought wrong. This was real, everything was.

I held my hand tightly over the wound, not allowing any of the blood to surface. She began to breath heavily, and laugh.

"Do you remember when mom would always punish us by whacking us with that darn ole stick of hers?" She asked, letting out small painful chuckles. I nodded, as tears filled my eyes I let them escape, and fall like a waterfall.

"Well this, this feels just like it" she coughed a little, "but it's just a little worse"

I sniffed, and tightened my grip on my older sister, "then when mama died, daddy took over. Him and his alcohol and beatings, were never a good combo"

"Why do you speak of such cruel memories?" I asked "why can't we just talk about the good ones, sis?"

Again, she let out a weak chuckle, "because, there are no good ones." She stated the truth, we grew up in such a broken household that all we knew was fear and pain.

Our parents may have been the drunk, and beating type but at least they did one thing, they took care of us. They kept clothes on our back, a warm bed, and warm meals, that's all we could ever ask for. We weren't any trophy family, but at least we were a family.

I looked over at my two nieces, and younger brother. Emily and Sarah resembled Annie so much, and reminded me of her and I when we were younger. Emily, was like me, bold and strong, she may have seemed quiet but I knew that she wasn't weak. Sarah, she was exactly like Annie, always considerate and kind, such a sweet little girl.

Annie pressed her hand to my cheek, and smiled. "Take care of my babies, please" her eyes became glossy, as tears filled them.

Emily and Sarah, made their way over to her, very slowly. I stepped away so they could be alone. Annie lectured them, and told them over and over about how much she loves them.
