All breathing stops. I feel my heart cease beating. My lungs tighten. My feet tingle with small icy needles. Tears bubble up underneath my eyes. It's all over. My fingers twist slowly around the plastic bag. The plastic is thin. Cold.
"Hey!" A voice yells from around the corner. It sounded curious and demanding. My heart pumps again. I whip my head and body around to see a boy. No older than 20, and a camera bag strapped around his chest. The tears flow and my red nose and cheeks are the only color visible in my face. My mouth opens and I force air in. My throat feels like glass, as I suck in gulps of air between coughs of sobs. I can't tell if I'm making any sound of not, but the boy is.
"What are you doing man!" He yells walking closer.
I shake my head furiously, the gun pointed in the dead center of my head. A slight whisper shrieks out of my mouth. "No... No..!" But he doesn't hear me.
"Get away from me or I shoot!" Said the man said behind me. My body malfunctions, I don't know what to feel, more fear, or more sadness. I have never, not ever, felt this way before.
"Hey, I just wanna help okay... Why don't you put the gun down and we can talk this out." Why is he coming closer? Doesn't he know any better?
"Get away from me boy or I pop you too!" She yelled removing the barrel from my head to the boy. Relief flooded through my body along with some guilt.
The over-dressed woman who had slapped me reached in front of her to the man's shoulder and whispered something in his ear I can understand. The man lowered the gun. The boy approaches me and softly takes my elbow and brings me towards him. My knees are weak and I feel like I'm slow-motion. I turn around and throw the bag on the ground. Then the world catches up to me.
I'm out of the alley.
The boy has both hands wrapped around my on my forearm, walking behind me. I'm wide-eyed. What just happened? Who is this guy? He leads me into a coffee shop way down the road. He sits me down and stares at me normally taking out a menu from the wall. I blankly stare at the table, my hands folded tightly in my lap.
"You alright there?" He says glancing up at me then back down at his menu. But I say nothing. "Yoo-Hoo? Hel-lo-o?" he says waving a hand in front of my eyes. My eyes flick to him, the blank expression remaining on my face.
"What?" I stagger out. The word is covered my sob. I have no idea what to even say to this guy.
"I'm Tyler." He says with a smile, reaching a hand out to me for me to shake it. I still stare at him.
I clear my throat. "What the hell was that?" I harshly whisper. He looks at me like I was supposed to know he was going to show up.
"I just saved your life. That what happened." Then I notice his camera bag is missing. He gave up his camera for a girl he didn't know. All of a sudden I remembered I had to go back. I would be dead when I went back if I stayed another minute. I hurried to sit up and leave but he grabs my arm. I look at him wide-eyed again then pull my arm away and shuffle out. Great now I'm lost. I look around while the cold wind blows in my face. The boy named Tyler ran out and threw his hands up in the air. I turn and run, I'm not to talk to anybody. I dart around a couple corners and threw a yard of a bank. I must have gone in a complete circle because I see the building I left this morning. I stop for just a minute, debating wether I should go back or not. Then I remember what Kat had said: 'he'll find you, just like he did the first time.' I shudder than jog back and climb up the rusty ladder to the roof. I open the latch, and I see the man.
Waiting for me.
