Prologue

10 years back into the past

I am woken from my glorious dream to a loud, ear ringing sound. Wait. That sound is the smoke detector. That must mean...Oh no!

In a instant I drop down from my bed to the ground on all fours. Still I choke on the gas in the air. Smoke. It is so strong I can almost taste the god awful smell that chokes you to death.

I crawl to the door and put the back of my hand on it. Remembering the fair I went to that had a bunch of firefighters telling us to that.

Sssssss!

I yank my hand back from the burning sting. Still wincing, I crawl over to my desk. I grab my long sleeved shirt (thank god I am not a clean freak) and my autograph baseball. I grab my slip-on-shoes and also my quilt.

I hurl the baseball at my window and take the long sleeved shirt and push the glass away to make enough room for me to crawl through. It doesn't really help that my room is on the second floor.

I grab my quilt and put my shoes on. I turn to see my door go into flames. Feeling the hot air explode into my face. That's when my eyes find my parents room through the flames across the hall fall to the first story. No! I hope they made it out in time.

I force my frightened eyes to look away from the threatening flames moving toward me and to the window. Which instantly sending a message to my feet to move and jump out the window. Then I do.

I hit the ground hard in my side. Some of the glass pierces through the quilt around me and pierce my skin like needles.

I hold back a scream of pain and moan instead. I jump up and run to my home's mailbox. Waiting for my family was forever pain. I wait and wait. What feels like two seconds feel like days.

I don't really hear the firetrucks or the ambulance or even the cops. I just stare at my burning home and whisper “mommy” and “dad” with “no, please, no” over and over again. I just say those things when the the firefighters ask me who else is in there.

I must have blacked out when they put me in the ambulance. All I remember is waking up on a rough cot, listening to the beeping of my heart, with ivy and needles in me. I gaze at the doctors around me gazing at the hospital,s TV screen.

The news lady was talking about some fire. It takes me a moment to see that its my fire. I tune into her.

Hello people of Carson. Tonight I bring you shocking, horrible, breaking news. The Santos family has had a terrible fire. Melanie Santos and Gorge Santos died in this fire. There seven year old daughter, Ruby Santos, is the only survivor.

She is at the Emergency Room Hospitable suffering from glass and burn injuries. It is believed that she had jumped from a second story window. She is still unconscious and will be able to speak with us tomorrow. Her mother and father were found under a pile of the second floor, burned, and unfortunately dead.

We still have no information on how the fire started, but we will keep an update. Please tune in later for any further information. Thank you.

And that's it. I sob a heart breaking sob. The doctors all turn to me, but half turn they

freeze. Like literally freeze. No joke.

That catches my attention throw all the mental and physical pain I am in.I mean like people don't just freeze. Right?

A flash of movement catches the corner of my eye. I watch as the door slowly opens and in comes in. OMG. A super HOT guy.

His face was full of gorgeousness. His eyes were a beautiful shade of brown. His hair was in between short and long, black colored. The skin apon this Greek god ( he reminds me of the Greek gods for their beauty.) was very tan and was covering some good biceps.

When he caught sight of me, a smile crossed his face and I swear he beamed up like a Christmas' tree. He came to the edge of my bed/cot and said“It's okay, sweetie. You will be happy in some time. Your pain will heal.”He turns from me to the door.“I am sure this time. It is deeper in me. I know it. Please, Amy, please.”

After he is done with his begging, a gorgeous girl walks in and says to him“Fine. This is the last chance though. If it doesn't work then it is your fault.” turning to me“It is okay, sweetie. You will be okay. It's time I make the casting.”

She turns to look up at the sky and practically yells this “I call the gods of everything and everywhere to look apon this girl, this human girl, Ruby Santos, and protect her. Look at what she has done to survive. She has made a great loss. Please in take her sacrifice for protection in return until she has made the change from human to demon.”

I watch them turn around and leave. Right when they shut the door, all the doctors unfreeze. They rush to me and try to soothe me. I can hear them yelling at one another.“She isn't supposed to be awake yet. What all did she hear?”

My second to last thought was: who were those glorious/crazy people. That wasn't my last thought though when the doctors put a needle in my arm. My last thought was Today was the loss of everything from me and the only emotion I feel is sadness. That is not the right emotion for my birthday.

Then I was gone under a deep sleep. Little did I know that in a few short 10 years that my life would change forever.
