ASPEN

i sat there; with my legs dangling from the edge, and my breath hitching with every crash the waves had produced. my head drooped to the side, slightly resting it on my shoulder as i watched the sun beckon.

"great view huh?" a raspy voice asked behind me.

i quickly snapped my head back, looking towards the direction of the voice. a tall boy wearing a bandana stood gracefully looking beyond me.

"well, um, yeah the sunse-"

"i wasnt talking about the sunset, love." he chuckled slightly.

"cliche, i like it."

"thats what i was going for," he shuffled down next to me, holding out his hand for me to shake. "louis, but you can call me lou for short."

i nodded. "aspen, but you can call me - aspen."

he gave a small laugh, coughing in between. i looked at him with worried eyes, him not making eye contact as he blankly smiled out into the horizon. his smile slowly faded as he got up quickly, grabbing my shoulder in the process. he held out a hand for me, me taking it gently. louis looked so frail and gentle, me worried if i might cause him pain.

"what's the matter," he asked quietly. "i can see it in your eyes."

"oh, so you're one of those people?" i smirked and he let out a heavy breath, beginning to walk, gesturing for me to follow.

"you know, im not like the rest." he began to say.

"how so?" i asked curious.

"this is not a way for me to get you to like me, or feel sorry for me, you hear?"

i nodded, beckoning for him to continue. he looked at me with a sad expression, but happy eyes. i smiled shyly telling him it was okay.

"i have a brain tumor. but aspen, please promise me that if we become friends you cannot treat me differently okay?" i nod very slowly, tears forming in my eyes at the newfound information. he laughed.

"w-why are you laughing?" i asked quietly, looking him square in the eyes.

"no reason. hey, do you want to go somewhere with me?"

"no offense, louis, but we literally just met and you're asking me to go somewhere with you?" he nodded with a grin plastered on his delicate face. i smiled back, indicating my agreement as we walked towards his car.

my head bobbed against the window as i began to stare at the scenery. i hadn't been near this side of london before, so it was a new experience. a sudden thought popped into my mind as i asked a question i would soon regret.

"you can drive?" louis laughed for a good three minutes before answering.

"god, aspen. im 22 and im sick, not blind!" i frowned as he turned towards me. i decided to not speak further as we continued to drive. we stopped at an abandoned car garage as i raised an eyebrow at him.

"what are we doing here?" i asked him shyly. he got out of the car and nodded his head in the direction of the garage, motioning for me to follow him. i let myself out of the car and followed him upon his request. we came upon a gate and i was beginning to become suspicious. louis began to climb the gate, reaching the other side in the matter of five minutes.

"come on!" he yelled from the other side. i stood with my mouth agape.

"are you crazy?!" i yelled back.

"crazy for you." he winked.

"flirt," i retorted, rolling my eyes as i began to climb the gate. i made it over, slowly but surely as i looked around for louis. i heard humming as i looked towards the sound. louis was seated in the back of an old tailgate as he hummed, looking up at the sky.

"come lay with me." i nodded and made my way over towards him. we sat in silence for a good ten minutes, enjoying the beautiful view before louis spoke up.

"aspen?"

"yeah?" i looked towards him.

"do you want to play twenty questions?"
