Don't Cry Over Spilled Coffee

A couple weeks went by after the party, Scarlett saw Deran most days. Either they would go to the other's house or they would go out somewhere. She was completely smitten with him and from my perspective he seemed smitten with her as well. She said that they always talked about random stuff and hadn't even had sex yet, which was surprising seeing how they were all over each other at his party. She mentioned that Deran told her about Craig and Nicky. Apparently before J, their nephew, moved into the Cody house, she was dating him because they met in school (she's only like 18 by the way). When J broke up with her, she kept coming around to the house because she took advantage of their luxuries. Smuf, their mother, wanted Craig to make sure she didn't really come around the house for a while. Craig took her to the beach and smoked a blunt to get her away from their house. After this Nicky, supposedly seduced Craig and they did some coke and hooked up, then Nicky told J to spite him for breaking up with her. Everything is now awkward in the family, especially when Craig, Nicky, and J are all in the same room, according to Deran. I could definitely see that; I would be pissed too if someone did that to me. He said that she is really pushy and is always trying to get in their business. Since she's in high school, Nicky is apparently really clingy and Craig hates it. She said that Deran wasn't sure why Craig was still with her because she's so young, but assumed it had to do with an easy hook up.

Anyway, when they weren't together Scarlett would spend all of her time thinking and talking about Deran, even when I would visit her at work. She worked at a boutique in town while I worked as a barista (and anything else they needed me to do) at a locally owned coffee shop. It's not the best job in the work, but it could be worse. When I visited her last week, she was talking about him so much that a customer waited about 5 minutes in the dressing room for Scarlett to bring her a different size in the dress that she was trying. Scarlett is honestly so head over heels for Deran.

I got to work today, Monday morning, more exhausted than I normally would have been. Last night, Scarlett made me stay up until the early hours of the morning talking about her latest adventure with Deran, as she liked to describe it as. Apparently, he tried to teach her how to surf, but it didn't end so well because she just kept falling off the board. So, thinking that I would be able to go to sleep at 3:00 in the a.m. and still be fully functional during my 6:45 a.m. shift, was being way too optimistic. At work, I had to go around to all of the tables and serve coffee and other pastries to the customers, which I loved doing because I got to talk to the customers. Our coffee shop was more like a small café than an actual coffee house.

My shift was going by much slower than normal it usually does until a group of guys came in. "I'll be right with you," assuring them that I acknowledged they were there while I was wiping down a table. I finished with the table and walked over to them getting out my notepad, "Hi welcome to California Coffee Bean, can I take your order?" As I look up I recognize them as the Cody's and I see Craig looking at me with his signature smirk.

"Hey Layla, I didn't know you worked here. I'm going to have to start coming here more often." He said visibly looking me up and down. No Layla, he has a girlfriend, even if she is bitchy. Don't be a homewrecker. They all gave me their orders and I found out that the other guy that was with them was Pope, their brother.

They all talked and drank their coffees, but every time that I came over to check on them I could tell that they would change to subject of their conversation very quickly or would shush each other, like they were hiding something. Once they left, I went to go clean up after them when I saw a random napkin on the table with writing on it. Before I looked at it, I put all their cups in the bin to take to the kitchen. I grabbed the napkin and it had a phone number written on it and it said, 'Call me, Craig.' I was smiling down at the napkin putting it in the pocket of my apron. I started walking towards the kitchen with the bin full of coffee cups; and, doing this while I'm distracted...not a good idea. Of course, I end up running into one of my co-workers and dropped everything on the floor and he accidentally spilled coffee on me. Luckily it's not scolding hot, but I still have 3 hours left of my shift, so that's just great.

*****Some Hours Later*****

When my shift was over, I left with my stained uniform still on and started walking to my car when someone called my name. "Hey Layla! Wait up!" I turned around to be met with Craig again.

"Are you stalking me, Craig Cody?" I teased. Dammit Layla stop flirting. He. Has. A. Girlfriend. I really need to control myself...but he's so cute.

"Of course!" He replied playfully. His expression changed when he looked at me. "What happened to your shirt?"

"Oh! I–uh– got some coffee spilled on me a couple hours ago." I told him while my cheeks began to burn up. He laughed a little.

"Oh well you know what they say: don't cry over spilled milk...well in this case coffee. Anyways I was actually wondering if you wanted to come to this party on Saturday?" Craig asked while scratching the back of his neck looking almost embarrassed.

"Sure. Just let me know where." I gavehim my number so that he could call or text me with the information. When I gothome later that day, Craig texted me with the address, it was at Renn's house. He texted saying that I could bring Scarlett since Deran is going to be thereanyways. Scarlett and Renn are friends that partied together, so she said that she would go. And it was another excuse to see Deran. Craig said that it would be fun, but I have a gut feeling it might not be all that fun, especially since he said Nicky was going to be there too.
