My father's hands are on my shoulders, shaking me. He's saying something to me, but I'm not really listening. Something about his slightly disturbed expression makes me nervous.

"Scarlett! Get up! Up, up, up!"

"Goodness, what is it?"

"Get dressed. Armor, now." I know better than to question him. I go over to my wardrobe and remove my armor from the hanger. I slip it on, throw on my boots, brush my long, black hair and head downstairs. I see a woman, wearing a strange suit talking to my parents. Loki Laufeyson and Diana Jackson. My brother stands in a corner, his green eyes flickering with concern. For some reason, he looks exactly like our father, but his personality is very different. The woman spots me and motions for us to come with her. We step outside the door and stop. She lets us say our goodbyes, I love you's and be safe's. We begin to walk. I look out over the field. My emerald eyes focus like camera lenses on a point in the distance. There's an enormous, monstrous-looking thing coming towards us, its face shaded over by the light from the sun rising behind it. My brother, Ares, makes a move towards me, but I'm too fast. I sprint in the direction of the dot, which grows larger and larger. It's a person! I push myself to run faster and I finally make it to him. I sort of tackle him, but he remains upright. The monster's foot is about a hundred yards away. 90 yards. 80 yards.....20 yards. 10 yards. I brace myself for impact, since the thing hasn't seen us yet. On the moment we should've been squashed, I just hear a sonic boom. I swing my head up to see the thing collapse. When it hits the ground, the ground shakes. I look up at the man I just risked my life for. He's sweating profusely. I break away from him and run back to my astondished older brother.

"What did you see?" I ask, my eyes bright.

"I don't know. When you latched on to him, this big transparent wall came up. It looked like shield. The monster hit the wall and sort of, well, died." I frown. Hm. Cool. Scarlett Laufeyson-- the Defender. Doesn't quite fit my family name- my father nearly destroyed the entirety of New York quite a few years back, and my mother was exiled from a place called Asgard for theft. The woman firmly grips my hand, probably so I won't do something stupid, and starts walking again. We are pulled along behind her. It wasn't too long of a walk- just a mile or so. She guides us into a large, dome-shaped building. It is covered floor to ceiling in glass windows, and thus reflects the light of the sun harshly back at the surrounding environment.

The woman stops and says sharply to my brother and I, "Both of you will be tested for compatibility. For now, while we pick the candidates, you may rest in your rooms. Mr. Becket, show them the way." A man steps out from behind her. I recognize him as the man whose life I saved. He goes into a hallway, and when we don't follow him, he sighs.

"You're safe here. Especially you," he pauses and points a finger at me. "You're a hero now, and you'll be treated as such. However, you are still expected to find a job, and that goes for the both of you." He turns back around and takes us to a large metal door. He fishes out a key and opens it. There's two beds, a painting, a bookshelf with very thick books, and a large bathroom. My brother and I step inside.

"You guys can do whatever you want in and to this place. Paint the walls, put up posters, the whole shebang. Paint's over there." He gestured to a small, but very specific selection of paints. After that, he closes the door. I look at Ares and he looks back at me.

"If I didn't know any better, I'd say that these people already have some information on us," Ares says, going over to the paints and examining the colors.

"I wouldn't be surprised," I reply, picking up a paint bucket that holds dark green paint. "This is the ugliest color ever."

"Isn't it?" Ares chuckled, lifting up another bucket. "Look at this one," he sniffed it. "Smells bad. This color is worse than that one."

I peered into the paint can. It was a sickly green color. "Gross. All these colors are terrible; maybe we should just put up posters or something."

Ares grinned like a cat. "I actually have a better idea."

We got to work.
