(Riza's POV)
I froze. Did I really just hear my beloved say he loved me? Could that mean... No! I couldn't let myself hope. I needed clarification. "What are you saying, Mustang?" I took a fortifying breath before continuing. "Do you really mean that or should I kick you out and move on with my life?" I held my breath as he opened his mouth.
"My sweet, gorgeous Love. Of course I mean that. I would never reject you, especially now that there are no frat laws." I released my breath in a whoosh, hardly daring to believe what I was hearing. "I can't say I've loved you as long as you have me, but I have loved you for eight years. Eight very long years where I've had some very close calls. Where I barely stopped myself from kissing you silly and disgracing both of us." He punctuated his statement by walking up to me, grabbing my lapel, pulling me to him, and kissing me deeply, yet briefly.
Oh. My. Goodness. That kiss was definitely worth waiting ten years for. I took a deep breath, then laughed as I heard Roy do the same. "Amazing," he whispered, then smirked. "Much better than all the other women." I could tell he was just trying to goad me. He knew I disapproved of the guys' philandering ways.
"That's nice. I mean, I've had better." Of course I was lying. I'd never kissed another man in my life. But my statement had the desired effect on Roy as he let out a vicious growl. I laughed out, "I jest. You know I've never been involved with a man. The guys have ribbed me enough about it over the years."
He growled again before reclaiming my lips. After several minutes we were drawn apart by the sound of a scared squeak. I looked up in time to see Private Kirkland turning tail. "Wait, Private!" My voice, having just been otherwise occupied, sounded harsher than intended. "What do you need?"
"Doctor Klaut needs to speak with you immediately, Ma'am." Kirkland's voice was barely above a whisper, "I didn't mean to interupt you, Major."
I knew, without a doubt that I was taking this boy with me when I left Southern Command. "You did nothing wrong, Private. You were doing your job." I stepped away from Roy , straightened myself, and headed to the infirmary. "You sent for me, Doctor."
"Yes, Major. We've finally figured out what all our people have."
"Well? Out with it Doctor Klaut."
I saw his hesitation. "Hydrux."
My world spun. "Hydrux." I repeated in a whisper, "How?..."
