"Lucian! Hi! What the hell are you doing here so late?"
Lucian stood there, arms crossed around his chest.
"Can I come in? I've got news" Lucian started towards the door and walked past Ava, not waiting for her to invite him in.
Lucian and Ava were friends before they were even brought into this world. Their mothers were friends in Highschool and they have been close ever since. Lucian and Ava spent many Christmas holidays together and they were always at each other's houses, either playing video games or monopoly. Ava felt close to Lucian in a way that was hard to explain. She felt like he understood her and she understood him. She knew she could tell him anything without having to worry about judgement or being criticised. They have stood side by side each other through thick and thin and even when Ava's mother died, Lucian was the only person that pulled her back on her feet. It was also Lucian who encouraged her to pursue her mother's dream.
"Bad or Good?"
Ava followed him into the living room. She couldn't help but feel a spark of doubt and uncertainty. It was as if she could sense that he came bearing bad news, maybe even terrible news. She slumped on the couch next to him, sitting with his legs crossed. She looked at him. He was staring at her with brooding eyes and an absent expression and suddenly his face was pale, white and bleak.
"It's Em. She's in the hospital." Lucian said, his voice husky and fragile. The tears in his eyes suddenly reached its capacity and came sliding down his cheek, gracefully, and delicate. His lips trembled as he tried to hold in the weeps and the cries. It was bad for a male to show his emotion; especially to a girl he has been hopelessly in love with since pre-school. One by one, each teardrop made its way down his cheek and disappeared as it reached his chin. His dark Atlantic blue eyes looked as if an ocean had been encased inside of a wide glass marble. Ava knew he was hurting, she could feel his despair as if it was her own.
"Oh Lucian," She whispered, "I am so sorry." She enclosed her arms around him as he tightly clasped her sleeve; his tears seeping under her shirt.
"It was a...a hit and run. She was walking to the supermarket and I didn't realise what had happen...until I... I got the call from the hospital." Lucian looked at Ava, his expression full of sorrow.
"I am so sorry Lucian," she said.
She gently placed her hands on his cheek as she felt his warm tears. She lifted his head up so that Lucian's eyes met hers'. She looked at him with a longing desire, affection but only as family, nothing more. She loved Lucian, the way a sister would love her brother.
She stood up pulling Lucian with her.
"Let's go see her."
---
To say that the drive to the hospital was awkward was an understatement. Ava drove Lucian's ute as he stared blankly outside the window. He didn't look at her once, even when they walked through the hospital doors. Ava felt like it was as if he forgot she was there, or maybe he didn't want her to be there. She, however, was continuously glancing back and forth at Lucian as if he was a gold bar left unguarded. Her mind was racing with things to say but nothing felt appropriate.
As they reached the reception of the ward, Lucian suddenly stopped walking and turned to Ava.
"Wait here. I'll be right back." Lucian said. Something felt uncertain. He's voice was no longer shaky, his face was no longer sorrow, but just expressionless, blank and hollow.
Ava nodded, moving her lips into a reassuring and comforting smile.
Lucian headed towards the reception and began speaking.
"Her name is Emily. Emily Sanders. I'm her brother. I really need to see my sister." He leaned against the reception table talking to a lady behind it.
Lucian turned his head towards a man in a white coat closing a door of what looked like an ER. He walked towards Lucian steadily.
"Are you Miss Sander's family?" The man said.
"Yes, where is she? I need to see her." Lucian said. There was a strain to his voice, a sort of exhaustion.
The man looked at Lucian and shook his head.
"I'm sorry, but your sister did not make it,"
Lucian's world shook. His heart beating like the thrumming wings of a caged bird.
"But the baby did."
