Chapter One

The wind whistled thorough my ears. My hair flew out behind me.

"NOW!"

I fell down, hundreds of feet. I whooped with joy. The ground grew closer and closer. Then there was a blur of gray below me, and I slowed.

"Nice catch, Magnali!" I shouted over the wind.

The dragon just snorted. "One of these days you are going to get yourself killed, child." But I could still see a smile on her silver snout. I laughed, and we flew back to the cave.

Magnali never mentioned it, but I had learned that she was the Dragon of the Sky, meaning she was SUPER powerful. She fit the part, with a sleek build, graceful movements, and immense strength. She could breath any flame, use any magic, but was strongest in the element of air. In other words, she was awesome.

"KAYLIE! KAYLIE! KAYLIE!" I was bowled over as soon as I set foot in the cave.

"OOF!" I stared into a pair of emerald green eyes. "Fern, you've squashed me flat!"

The little green dragon jumped off, flapping his tiny wings. His scales were the color of a dark forest fern, hence the origin of his name. His wings were a pale green. He had hatched almost two months ago, to a dead mother, so Magnali had taken him in. Just like she did for me.

I remember the day so clearly. I was huddled next to my dead mother, practically bawling my eyes out, when she came. I was petrified at first. Dragons, in books, were always mean and scary. Well, they were all wrong. Magnali was gentle and sweet, and took me under her wing; quite literally.

I was broken from my reminiscing by a sudden squeal from Fern. "I DID IT! I DID IT! I DID IT!" I glanced over to see little green spurts of flame shooting all over the place.

"Good job, Fern!" Magnali was pleased. I smiled. "Yeah, nice!" But I couldn't help but be reminded that I was different. Sure, we could communicate, and some of my clothes were made with old dragon scales, but I was human. And about 10 times smaller.

Later that night, Magnali and Fern went flying with Galeah, my "older sister," once she returned home. Galeah was the only one of us actually hatched to Magnali, and they looked exactly alike. Same pale gray scales, aqua eyes, and sky blue wings.

I sat on the ledge outside the entrance, a sigh escaping my lips. All three dragons loved me, but I was still different. I had only met one other dragon since Magnali adopted me, and he had been pretty nice to me. But what would others be like? I don't fit in. I thought bitterly.

Then I remembered something. A book my mom had read me. The Legend of the Half-Blood.

I smiled. I would finally fit in.

Later that night, I dragged my old, tattered satchel out from under my bed. Well, more like a rock shelf with some blankets and pillows. It was actually quite comfortable. I dug through it, scattering things across the floor. Ha! Found it!

I pulled the book out, brushing off the dust. I sneezed, and glanced around. Magnali had let me grab some things from the village before we left, and this was my favorite book of all time. It was the one my mom was reading me before...

I swept away past pain, and turned the first page. The Legend of the Half-Blood. She had to complete a perilous journey to achieve the power of dragons, facing countless obstacles.

She was an average girl with brown hair and blue eyes, nothing special. But as I re-read it, I began to notice things. She had aqua-blue eyes, instead of regular. Like me. She was found by a Sky Dragon in a circle of stones. Like me. The more I read, the more I realized...

This book was my story.
