Chapter Eight

I walked through the woods, humming some random tune. A slight wind stirred the leaves, causing a few to fall around me. Autumn must be approaching soon, I mused. Ellsmare was three days away now, and that was only the first of many landmarks.

The hairs on the back of my neck tingled. I'm being followed. Almost instantly, I was facing the opposite direction, blade poised to throw.

"Eek! Don't throw, please!" a familiar voice squeaked.

    I lowered my dagger. "Sabrina?"

I heard a sigh, then the earlier named teen walked out from behind a tree. She wore a red dress underneath a short cloak of the same color, her orange hair in waves. She kinda looked like Little Red Riding Hood.

"I thought I'd last longer without getting caught..." she sighed sadly.

"What the heck are you doing here?" I asked.

"Well, I...I was really hoping I could join you on your journey..." She looked up at me with sad eyes, and said in a pleading tone, "Pretty please?"

I pinched the bridge of my nose. I need to do this alone...but I can't just leave her here...she probably followed me this far, so...UGH! "I guess you can't turn back now-"

"YAY!" the read-head squealed before I could finish.

"BUT," I held my hand up, silencing her. "When we reach the end of this journey, and there is a huge task I have to complete, I must do it alone. Do you understand?"

She nodded her head solemnly. "I understand."

"Good," I shoved my dagger back in its sheath. "Now, let's get going. Ellsmare isn't getting any closer."

She only nodded again, and we set off in a comfortable silence.

    "Hey, Kaylie?"

We were sitting on a log, eating some of the food Sabrina brought. Neither of us being very hungry, I held an apple core in my hand while my friend was finishing off a piece of bread. In front of us a small fire crackled. "Yeah?"

"What's this journey about, anyway?" she asked.

I was dead silent on the outside, but a heated debate roared in my head. I wonder if I can trust her...

I felt a hand on my shoulder, and I looked over to see those kind purple eyes. "You can trust me. I'm your friend!" Sabrina grinned as she finished her sentence.

My ever-warring mind had settled on two thoughts; One-Can she hear what I'm thinking?! Two-Right...friends...

Before I could change my mind, the whole story of the book that described my life and the light and dark dragons tumbled out of my mouth. Sabrina just stared at me.

    "There are DRAGONS?!"

I then had to explain my early years-my village being attacked, then being adopted by dragons.

When I finished my tale, the fire had been reduced to dying embers. Without realizing it, my eyes had started to water when I talked about Jallem. I was pulled into a tight embrace.

"I never knew you had it so rough. I'm sorry, Kaylie," she whispered. I returned the hug, letting a single tear fall.

"There's nothing for you to be sorry about."

"Kaylie?" Sabrina said sleepily.

"Hm?" I murmured, half awake.

"Now that I think about it, Jallem and Flavem sound pretty similar..."

Sabrina was right. They do sound alike. And the woods around there looked kinda familiar...then again, every tree in this gosh darn forest looks just like the next.

My thoughts are getting way ahead of me.

Yeah. So this is a short chapter. I'm sorry! It had a good ending point, so I just let it end. Sorry if you were expecting longer. Don't start throwing rotten fruit! (I suck at author's notes)

Gomen (sorry),
