*Charlotte's POV*

After the concert was over, I followed the crowd to the merch table to buy another crewneck.

While I waited in line, I thought about how strange my mother acted earlier today. She was warm and inviting, like a mother should be. My mother will never be that. She haunts my nightmares. I don't go a day without thinking about all those times she hit me with a closed fist, all those times she told me she wished I was never born.

Today she was kind, and that scared me. It wasn't right.

I paid for the shirt and a vinyl of Selfish Machines, and started to leave.

You don't know this, but I'm a very clumsy person. I trip on flat floor, so when I ran directly into someone on the way out, it didn't surprise me. I looked at the floor and mumbled an apology, then continued onward.

"Hey, you there! You're that chick!" A male voice called at me, the person I ran into.

Leave it to me to run into Vic Fuentes.

"Erm... Hey?" I said awkwardly.

"Do you have a ride, or are you driving yourself? It's snowing pretty bad out there." Vic asked.

"Actually, I should be calling someone now." I said.

He nodded. "Do you want me to sign your vinyl while you call?"

"That would be great, thank you." I handed it to him.

I pulled my phone out of my pocket and dialed mom's number so she can pick me up. It rang three times before she started to speak.

"Charlotte, don't say a word. I'm so, so sorry, and if you're never able to forgive me I understand. It's for the best. Read the letter in your bag. It explains everything. I'm so fucking sorry." Then she hung up the phone.

My hands shook as I dug through the bag for the letter. The words cut as sharp as blades.

               My dearest Charlotte,

I've been planing this for years, and all the papers    are finally signed. The one thing daddy left me is a good lawyer.I'll put it bluntly: You're no longer my child.  I need to start a new life, and I don't want it to include you. I'm leaving you to fend for yourself like the rat you are. We both knew it was gonna happen someday.

Since I'm such a generous person, I've included $250 and some essentials you'll need for survival.

This is the hunger games, bitch. May the odds be ever in your favor.

                                             Sincerely, "Mom"

I fell onto my knees, and tears threatened to spill out of my eyes. Vic rushed over to me, vinyl in hand.

*Vic's POV*

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the girl fall to the ground. I ran over to see what happened.

She was on her knees, her face emotionless. I stood her up.

"What's wrong darling? Are you ok?" I asked.

All she did was show me the paper. I felt anger swell up in the bottom of my stomach. How the fuck could someone be so heartless and give away their child like that? Charlotte could be dead, she wouldn't care.

"Charlotte, I'm gonna sort this out, I promise you, you'll be okay."
