Deryn (pov)

My alarm went off I groaned, I'm really not a morning person. Then it hit me I get to see Leah again and I got up. Today I paid more attention to what I wore and straightened my hair some. I didn't want Leah to think I was a slob. I looked like a skater girl with my black shirt and dark jeans. I owned a lot of black clothing. I hurried downstairs and rushed out the door avoiding my parents. I drove to the nearest coffee shop. I stood in line fiddling with my keys going over choices. Coffee didn't affect me but it did taste good. Maybe I should get something for my girl, I thought. Great I was already owning her. Maybe a donut.... or maybe not. That could be like calling her fat but if I got the protein bar it could be the same thing. Damn why did this have to be so hard?

"Miss," the guy at the register called to me.

"I would like a regular coffee and two of the chocolate protein bars."

"Seven fifty," he said. Chocolate protein bars that should balance things hopefully. I never really tried to impress a girl before. I walked into first period and my body instantly relaxed and my wolf settled. No one was sitting next to her.

"Protein bar?" I held it out in front of her.

She smiled "thank you Deryn. Yum, chocolate one of my favorite things." Leah closed her eyes as she chewed she gave a slight moan. I couldn't look away holy shit did she have to eat a protein bar like this my mouth was watering from the sight.

"Deryn your in my seat." I tore my gaze away to see Chandler giving me an ugly look. I had a few classes with him before. I knew the look in his eyes, jealousy. he wanted to be close to my mate. my wolf prowled close to the surface.

"Go sit in my seat." He looked over and frowned.

"Come on it's Jake that gothic, anime kid."

"So, just go," I said through clenched teeth. I locked eyes with him humans always backed down from a challenge. He gave Leah a look and walked away. I caught her watching me.

"So how long have you been going to school here? I asked ignoring what just happened.

"I moved here from Texa's and in rolled late into the last semester last year. My mom wanted a change of scenery."

"Thats cool I would like to travel I've lived here forever. I always wanted a sense of adventure."

"I thought about traveling too I would love to visit Spain or Italy." Leah was my perfect match.

"You have the most beautiful eyes." I scooted closer and brushed a strand of lose hair out of her eyes. I let my fingers brush against her skin. Her cheek was warm and soft. My wolf practically screamed at me to mark her. Leah's breathing grew deeper, she was lost for words. I leaned in my lips inches from hers, her lips parted slightly. Her breath warm against my lips smelling of chocolate. As I was about to kiss those soft perfect lips. The teacher cleared his throat rudely Leah and I pulled back.

"Am I interrupting something ladies?" He asked arms crossed staring me down. Leah blushed avoiding his gaze.

"Yesss," I hissed my wolf wanted to snap his neck for interrupting us.

"Would you like to tell the dean that?" He smirked I was losing control again. My fists clenched and my teeth throbbed.

Leah grasped my hand under the table caressing my knuckles with her thumb. "We wont interrupt your class again," she said calmly. I paid attention to her touch and the smooth circles she made on my knuckles. My wolf relaxed and my grip loosened.

"It better not," he continued with his assignment. Leah could sooth my beast with a touch. I didn't try to kiss her again but we didn't stop talking the rest of the class. We had so much in common we both liked rock bands and fantasy movies. I figured she was a big romantic the way she talked about her favorite books like Bloody Claws and Darkness Embraced.

The bell rang and we walked out together.

"I'll see you at lunch?" she asked full of hope.

"Maybe," I smiled. I didn't want to hurt her. I thought back to the forest and the danger I could put her in. Not to mention the danger just being around me, I almost lost control to my wolf today. Leah was innocent and my touch would only tarnish her. When lunch came I ate on the other side of campus. Should I follow my head and stay from her or follow my heart and be with her. School ended and I was headed to my jeep.

"Deryn," a voice called one I could never mistake. I turned around and Leah jogged up to me.

"I don't get it why are you avoiding me," she looked upset. I shrugged not knowing what to say.

"Were friends.... I had something to do."

She studied me "Your lying." Damn she could read me like a book.

"Um look I have to go." I turned to leave but I really didn't want to leave her.

"I know were mates."

My body tensed "How do you know that."

"Answer my question first."

"Because your human and I'd only put you in danger." She looked at me like I had two heads.

"Wow werewolf's really are self centered. You can't tell can you?"

I growled "how do you know what I am." Leah ignored me.

"So that's why your avoiding me you think I'm human." She shook her head and stormed off angrily. I stood there shocked and confused. How did she know this and what was she talking about I couldn't tell. I didn't know what to do this changed things. I wanted to go after her and ask questions. My wolf wanted to go after her and nuzzle her in apology for upsetting her. I didn't do either I just stood there. I drove home trying to wrap my mind around what just happened.

When I arrived home Baz's truck pulled up beside me. her and Aria got out.

"Who's the girl," Aria asked.

"We saw you talking to her in the parking lot," Baz said.

"More like arguing are you okay?" Aria asked concerned.

"Fine just something between a friend," I said.

"A wolf that practically lives in solitued has a human friend." Baz said eyeing me. I growled low.

"Baz stop," Aria said.

"You have to admit strange somethings going on." My teeth throbbed and I knew my eyes changed wolf gold. Baz was starting to piss me off.

"You don't know what happens in my life so stay out of it," I growled sending challenge. Baz's eyes turned gold instantly and she rumbled low in her chest.

"Quite acting like your life sucks," she growled. I stepped closer.

"What would you know about life sucking miss perfect. You have everything you want becoming alpha popular and you have the perfect mate. So tell me about sucking." I challenged. My wolf itched for the fight.

"You could be popular you just don't want to and you'll find you wolf mate eventually."

I snarled "really because my mates human." I was seconds away from shifting and attacking Baz.

"Enough!" Aria yelled stepping between us. " Deryn go for a run and cool off and both of you stop issuing challenge!" I tore my gaze from Baz submitting but I didn't bow my head. I walked off to the forest. I ran till it was getting dark and I was so flamed and distracted I ran out of our territory. I threw back my head and howled out my fustration. Then I heard something and crouched low. Great can't even howl alone then all a sudden I was tackled. I rolled with something brownish tan I jumped to my feet getting my ground for a fight. But I froze right in front of me was a lioness.
