.

It was a Sunday evening, and held in an apartment in the heights of New York, was a small gathering that seemed to hold one too many people.

 "You ok, Shawn?" said Andrew.

Shawn Mendes looked up from his drink and at his manager. He wasn't really looking him in the eye but, at his words and what he had said. He felt as though he had smiled weakly, back at him, which inspired a great pain within his stomach. Shawn didn't like hiding his feelings too much, especially the ones that needed to be shown. Andrew sensed this and told Shawn he'd be right back.

Shawn signed heavily and looked out the window, thinking. 'This is my life now. I've got to go with this. This is what I want.' But is this what he wanted? To be away from his friends and family? He was so tired of living normally, and he admitted that, but it seemed like every little thing was catching him by surprise.

Andrew came back with his phone and earplugs; it was facetime and Shawn could see his mom, Karen, mouthing words to him that he didn't yet understand. He wanted to look up at Andrew and say something but he couldn't hide the excitement he got from seeing his mother again. He quickly rushed to the bathroom, plugged in the earphones, and closed the door.

"Hi, mom!" said Shawn happily. It had been only 2 weeks since he had seen her, but since he had traveled quite a bit and now had an elongated stay in New York, it seemed like forever.

"Shawn, did you hear me talking to you?" Karen said, slightly annoyed. She smiled and relaxed when she heard his tone. "Is everything okay? I asked if you had gotten settled in alright."

"I love you, mom. And yeah, everything's going well. I miss you guys already. When are you guys coming to visit?"

"Wow, as a 16 year old boy on his own, I'd never thought I'd hear you say that." Karen laughed. "We can visit as soon as possible; how about this weekend? Want me to bring some pot roast?"

"Yes. And muffins. I love muffins. I'm also 17."

"I know. Shut up. (momz lol)I'm going to go see what Aaliyah wants from upstairs, here's your dad."

There was a quick ruffling of the screen as it went black and was on paused. Shawn took this time to check his reflection in the mirror. Besides the fact that he always looked good(he's not a cocky character, just a joke lol--he's Shawn), he looked horrible. He turned away from the mirror slightly embarrassed. He heard his dad's voice.

"Dad?"

"Hey, Shawn."

"You know it's still on pause right? I still can't see you. You have t-"

"Yup, I know, I just don't want to see your face right now."

"Dad."

"Shawn."

They both chuckled as Manny showed his face. "How you holding up, bud?"

Shawn hesitated and Manny nodded. He loved his parents equally, and could talk to the both of them about anything, but there's just some things one knew that the other one didn't see as well. Shawn appreciated this very much.

"Mom said you guys might come this weekend. Pack your bags I don't want you to miss your flight."

"Finally missing us, eh?"

"Eh. I always do. Sometimes I just wish I wasn't here doing all of this, and I was home with you guys."

"This is what you want to do, Shawn. Don't think about us too much, because I want you to know that we're always going to be here cheering for you every step of the way. I see the passion in your eyes when you're on the stage. You'll have your doubts, but I know you'll keep loving it. You know you love it, too."

Shawn let the words sink in and him and his father talked a little bit more. About the past few weeks, what was to come, but what had struck Shawn was the fact that he was wondering why he chose public American schooling over online.

"The classroom feel?" says Manny, scratching his beard. "Oh, yup, keeps you grounded. Your mother and I feel better with you so close so it all, and to us."

"Ah. Still wish I would've chose online."

"Too late, bud. You've convinced us to let you stay there, and it really does seem like a better choice. My phone is dying, but I'll tell Aaliyah to call you soon. Love you, Shawn."

"Love you too, dad." Shawn hung up the phone and tears slightly weld up in his eyes. He let them fall for a few moments then wiped them away. After that he just sat on the toilet seat, staring at the wall. He was so homesick. He could definitely wait another summer until school started.  A few moments seemed to have turned into a while, because by the time he looked at the clock it had said 10:30 pm. There was an immediate knock on the door. Shawn shook a little bit.

"Hey; you fall in?" laughed Shawn's bodyguard, John from the opposite side. "Me and Andrew are gonna head in for the night. I'm in the room across from you and Andrew is on your left."

Shawn opened the door and John pointed to Shawn's room down the hall.

"Are you okay?" said John. Shawn nodded. "Alright, just making sure. I'll walk you to school around 8:30; it starts at 9."

Shawn, taking in the information slowly then made a baffled expression. "I'm 17," he sassed. "I can't walk by myself?"

"You turned 17 a month and a half ago and you're an internet pop star sensation. So, no."

John walked down to his room and left Shawn in the bathroom doorway.

"I'm still 17." Shawn muttered going to his room.

"Heard that." John said, shutting his door.

Shawn mocked him silently again.

"Heard that, too." chuckled John.

A/N: Next chapter coming sooner than this one took, for sure, lol.
