"It's good to see you again!"
I glanced over, breaking my concentration of observing the cabin. Soren, who hadn't really gotten to greet me before, now got to take a good look at his campers without all the other crowd. I gave a wave in his direction. "'Sup, man?" Soren and I had gotten really close last summer, so I kind of treat him like another camper more than just my councellor.
He walked over to me as the other three got settled in. "How's life treating you?"
"Not bad, not bad. How 'bout you?"
"I'm great, thanks," he responded with a smile before turning around and clapping his hands loudly to get everyone's attention. My three cabin-mates, including Tobi, turned around and gathered around him. "Okay, gang. We're all gonna need to introduce ourselves before we can get to any unpacking done. When I call your name, say "here" and tell everyone your powers, okay?" All four of us nodded. "Good," Soren continued. "I'll start. My name's Soren. I can manipulate water and darkness." The other two kids looked impressed. Tobi and I, who already knew everything about him, just sat and listened for further instruction. "Okay, now you guys," Soren prompted us. "First... Giorgio?"
"Here," Giorgio responder obediently. He was wearing a black leather jacket and dark grey sweatpants tucked into high black boots. The thing that stood out about him the most were his large sunglasses, that had multiple shades of awkward colours that I had never seen before. "I can sort of teleport, and I have the ability to see ultraviolet rays of light. That's what these sunglasses are for, so that I'm not constantly seeing them."
That explains it, I thought to myself. Soren smiled with an impressed look on his face and responded by saying "I've never heard that one before! Cool," before referring back to his list. "Okay, Charles?"
"Charlie," a short boy with a baggy blue shirt and grey track pants corrected Soren politely. His bushy dirty-blonde hair was kind of wild.
"Sorry, Charlie," Soren responded. "Continue."
"I can, uh, walk through solid walls," he told us staring intently at the corner of the wall, "and I can also-"
However, before he could finish, a thin beam of ice went shooting from his forehead, directed at the wall. He jumped back, obviously having not expected to have done that. Soren, who is always quick to catch peoples' powers spinning out of control, dove foreward and thrust out his hand. As he approached the ice ray, he concentrated, his hand going frighteningly black, and a moment later there was what looked like a black hole replacing his palm. He caught the ice beam in his hand, but instead of hitting him, it was swallowed by the dark void he had conjured. Finally, Charlie got a hold of himself, and there was no more ice. The room got a good deal warmer after that.
Shock filled the air. Charlie looked both impressed and mortified. "Sorry sorry sorry," he kept repeating. I keep forgetting not to focus on anything too hard!"
Soren just returned a warm smile his way. "Not to worry, Charlie," he reassured him. Everyone makes mistakes. That's why we're here; to learn how to control our abilities."
Charlie looked at Soren like he couldn't believe he had forgiven him just like that. He just nodded feebly. Everyone in the cabin could guess by what just happened what Charlie's second power was; he could freeze anything he concentrated hard enough on. Charlie didn't even have to say anything, and he knew that.
Soren broke the awkward silence. "Okay," he continued, "Vince?"
"I'm here," I responded, raising my hand. Everyone turned to look at me. "I can see the future sometimes, and I can manipulate and control water."
