Weeks past and Lynn had to admit that the Tusk was not such a bad place to live despite her original beliefs on the goings on inside a House.
Servants did all her laundry and changed her sheets daily. The food was good and done to order. It was the life of a noble.
Still no closer to figuring out how to protect the Master Awl she was left with the one thing she had never been good with, time to think.
The Tusk was in a waiting state itself. Master Awl was fully healed but had gone into a reclusive mode and was running things through others.
This way of doing things was actually giving the Lady Flower the very power that she craved. Lynn watched but was unable to do much since she still felt like an outsider.
Only once did Lynn and Lady Dragonfly cross paths again and this time Lynn was ignored outright. However this gave Lynn an idea, seeing how she had the time and extra energy since coming to the House, she would do something to gain a friend. At least she hoped it would.
=====
Seeking out the Lady Dragonfly was difficult but few refused a Mage for long. Even a Walking Mage.
Coming to Lynn's quarters and repeating the multi guard action from before, the Lady Dragonfly stood waiting for Lynn to address her at the open door. Lynn had forced the meeting on a slow rainy day after she had gone to see Master Awl.
Gesturing for the two to come, Lynn led them into her room.
"I understand that you have to tread lightly but I need advice." Lynn began, "I have also learned much in my time here so I have a gift in exchange for this aid."With that Lynn pulled out a leather-cord necklace with a simple blue stone attached and handed it to the Lady Dragonfly.
"You need to wear it near your throat." Lynn said to her with a open smile and pointing like a fool at her own neck. She was excited by her own cleverness.
Looking unsure but smiling at Lynn's excitment, the Lady slipped the cord over her head, her guard pulled her thick black hair up and out of the cord.
"Now try writing on your slab with that stone of yours." Lynn said, bubbling like a pot of hot stew.
Seeming to sense what was about to happen her movements were quick and nervous as she pulled out the items needed for her to speak.
"What did you do, Walking Mage?" Her voice was strong and clear in Lynn's mind. "I feel no pull or weakening when I use the stone and slate." The old Guard behind the Lady began to smile a smile that could have cracked his face.
"A complex spell on the blue stone and leather cord enhances your spell on the stone and slate you use. Lack of training- and maybe level of magic on your part- and the loss of your voice, kept you from doing this on your own."
"Will it last?" Dragonfly asked gently, fearing the worst.
"As long as you live the spell will work. Do try to not touch the stones together the magucs are different and could react oddly." Lynn said seriously.
"So what do I owe for such a magnificent gift, Mage? For magic always has a balance and a price."
Lynn had become the house healer and minor attraction at the Tusk since she arrived. It had become near impossible for her to investigate the Masters accident. So what she really needed was a spy network.Learning about such had taken Lynn some time since she was so ignorant in city life and the ways of politics.
"I need a way to receive and deliver information privetly, that will not be intercepted." Lynn finally said.
Instead of answering her directly, Dragonfly asked Lynn this, "Does the Mage know how many 'Ladies' are in the Tusk? How about how many servants come and go through those narrow doors each sun up? Or even how many guards roam the halls and ways of this small House? How about the average amount of guests come here to drink or be entertained or just to gossip?"
