UNE VEUVE SE LAMENTE

Today she is feeling so lost.

Through the night she tossed and she tossed.

This morning, just as the dawn broke,

She thought she heard the words he spoke.

Did she imagine, "Hon. . . hon ... h _?"

You see, he always called her Hon

She listened again . . . but no more.

She was stunned; this was not a joke.

There are no ghosts

Not in her mind

(Heavenly hosts)

As the church boasts

But he's gone; the bed is vacant

She feels deserted, she feels spent

No longer cozy; she misses him

She's all alone, she's by the phone

Hoping his sister will call from home

When she hears her voice it sounds like him

Stops her feeling quite so dim

Brings back memories of him

He said his last goodbye; she cries

She should not be feeling so sad

That would only make him feel bad

To know she is feeling this way

That's what her friends say, anyway

"Cheer up, girl. Be happy today."

A/N  I wish to dedicate this poem to new widows but, at the same time, readers should find it in keeping with a Halloween theme.
