*Aubrey's POV*
A Few Days Later...
It feels weird to try and get back into normal routine, Michael still hasn't returned to work. I haven't bothered to ask him further about it, I asked him the other day and he changed the subject so I didn't bother pushing. It's nice having Michael around though, it's made it easier for me to cope, besides his constant worrying. Trying to get me to eat and sleep, which I have started doing again by the way which has made him do the same.
We were just finishing breakfast when we got a knock on the door. Michael got up to go answer it, Michael returns with a police officer. This must be the police officer Cody told me about that was helping with my investigation about my incident.
"Good morning, Miss Chambers." She greets me.
"Good morning." I nod.
She takes a seat across from me. Michael sits next to me.
"My name is Senior Constable Chapman. I've been helping out with your investigation like your brother must have told you. I have some news for you." She informs me pulling out a folder.
I look at her then the folder in her hand.
"What did you find out?" I ask her.
"Well we all definitely know someone tried to ride you off the road. We had a thorough look through cameras in the surrounding areas, spoke to residents in nearby homes and we luckily had a passerby near the scene." She explains.
"What did they see?" Michael asks.
"They saw a tall blonde man driving the car who rode Aubrey off the road. He actually stopped the car to get out, but instead of running over and checking on the person been hit like any normal person...he calmly walked over to see her current state then got back in his car and sped off." She admits.
My stomach turns, to think someone actually has the guts to do that to someone makes me sick. Even worse to try and see if they got the job done before leaving the scene of the crime. Constable Chapman must've noticed my uncomfortable-ness.
"I know this is difficult to hear, Aubrey. But we have identified the man." She says, looking at me sadly.
I look up at her.
"Who is it?" I ask.
"Christopher Monroe. Does that name sound familiar to you, Aubrey?" She asks.
I feel like my breathing just got caught in my throat, my heart stopped. I feel sick. I couldn't be.
"Miss Chambers?" Constable Chapman asks.
"Aubrey? Sweetheart? It's okay if you don't want to continue." Michael says.
I look up at Constable Chapman.
"No I need to end this. Yes I know him, he's my ex. He was here recently actually, ended pretty badly. He hit Michael and I hit him back. Things got pretty ugly. I'm guessing that what drove him to do this." I confess.
Constable Chapman nods and writes all this down in a book. Michael holds my hand gently. Once Constable Chapman finishes writing she looks back up at me and Michael.
"By the look of this situation of what you told me, you have a very strong chance of putting him away for a long time. The fact he started the fight here in the first place is also another pointer as well. You two have nothing to worry about." She reassures us.
She looks down at her cell phone and then looks back up at us.
"He has actually just been taken into custody now. You two will need to come to court. With this situation it will be a quick process, you two just need to give your side of the story and we'll give our evidence and then the jury will give him his verdict which will most definitely be guilty. The judge will then proceed to give him his sentence. Then you two can finally be left alone." She explains.
Michael and I both nod.
"I'll be in touch wit court hearings." She says before getting up and leaving.
I sigh. It's a relief that we finally caught who did this to me but I still can't wrap my head around the fact it's Christopher. Christopher almost killed me...he killed my daughter.
"I'm speechless." Michael says.
"Me too." I whisper. I put my face in my hands.
Michael wraps his arm around my shoulder and pulls me into his arms.
"We finally caught him. It still doesn't make this whole process any easier." He admits.
"It really doesn't. I just want to put him behind bars and then work on getting back to normal." I sigh.
I sit up, I look up at Michael with tired eyes. He looks down at me. We've been through so much over the last few weeks. All that crap that people say...
'Things will go back to normal in no time.'
'It will be like it never happened.'
That's all a load of garbage, our lives have changed forever because of someone's hatred and jealousy. Because of him I'm a completely different person, I'm lucky Michael hasn't run off. Because of Chris I've lost the little beautiful creation Michael and I have created, the beautiful girl we wanted to love and raise together in our home...
"What are you thinking about?" Michael asks, interrupting my thoughts.
"What I've always been thinking about ever since I woke up..." I admit.
"What's that?" He questions.
"How things could have gone so differently." I say, looking down at Penelope's hospital bracelet I've been holding the whole day, every day since she was born.
"I think about that too." Michael whispers, kissing my cheek.
The home phone rings and Michael gets up to go answer it. He comes back moments later with the phone in his hand, he places it on the table in front of me and presses the "Speaker Phone" button.
I look at him in a questioning manner.
"Hello Aubrey. It's your boss." Chief says.
"Hello. What's going on?" I ask.
"We have your test results back." He informs us.
"Oh. What do they say?" I ask frantically.
Michael reaches down and holds my hand, I squeeze his hand. I'm frightened of the outcome.
"The accident was pretty serious. But we took our time with you in surgery to delicately make sure we got everything and make sure we didn't miss anything. The rupture was pretty serious but..." He takes a deep breath.
"But what?" I ask in a panic.
"Because you're so fit and healthy otherwise and our brilliant surgeons took such good care of you...there isn't any reason why you can't carry another child." He admits.
Tears immediately fill my eyes, I haven't smiled this big in a long time. I gasp. This is the only good news that has come out of this whole horrible event.
"I can have more children?" I ask in tears.
"Yes Aubrey. You can have more children, you'll just need to be extra careful now." He confirms.
"Oh my gosh! Thank you so much, for everything. I don't know what I would have done without you and the team." I sigh in happiness.
"You're very welcome, Aubrey. You're like family, we'll always look after you. I'll let you go now. You know where to find me if you need anything." He says before hanging up.
I look over at Michael who's also crying in pure happiness, I wrap my arms around his neck and he wraps his arm around my waist. He gently squeezes me. We both cry together, enjoying this moment together. Our future is much brighter.
"We can have more children!" I cry out.
