Prologue

The two men watched the city as if they owned it. The lights were dim through the mists and the streets lay empty and silent...for now.

They stood like two black crows atop the slick rooftops, robed and cloaked in shadow. They were watching someone. They always were.

"Are you sure?" said one.

"Positive," said the taller one, eyes following a figure down below. "Undoubtedly."

"I hope you're right," said the other. "Your life depends on it."

A silence ran with the wind.

"My life is not in your hands," said the taller man. "And neither is yours in mine."

"But his is," said the other man, gesturing down to the city.

"He can handle himself," said the tall man. "He's done it all his life."

"Barely," said the other. "He's wanted by the Count. His picture is on every damn street corner. He's lucky to still be alive."

The taller man heard a door slam below. "We need him. We can't do this job with just the six of us. We've always had seven, always. Until..."

"Don't bring her up," said the smaller man as the winds swelled, bringing an eerie silence.

The taller man saw the figure below leap across a roof, then slid down a shoot somewhere and he was gone. "Clever," he whispered to himself.

"We shall move for him tonight then," said the smaller man as his temper waned, the shouts of guards echoing through the night like iron breaking glass. "He's already made enough raucous for one night." He turned from the rooftop. "If he resists..."

"He won't," said the taller man.

"Good," said the other man, walking away into the shadows behind them.

The taller man stared down the stone tower, snow beginning to trickle from the dark clouds overhead.

He spread his arms and jumped.
