(20) Liar, Liar Pants on Fire
Elizabeth strolled in like a lion about to have a meal. Her white dress was dragging behind her, reminding me of a bride that was left at the alter or something. Xavier placed himself in front of me, blocking my view of the dangerous beauty. She looked much better than she had when she was locked up in that old house. Like Joanna, Elizabeth was all dolled up. She wore a long white gown with lace capped sleeves and a sweetheart cut in the front. The back of her dress, similar to Joanna’s, was backless and in a heart shape. It was very vintage-like and reminded me of something a royal woman would wear on their wedding day, only a lot more fitting and revealing. Her hair was long, past her waist, and in shiny waves. Her makeup was heavy, with black eye shadow and bright red lips. I felt my self-esteem shoot right on down the second she walked in.
I hated to admit it, but Xavier’s creator/ex was gorgeous. You’d never think she was a nutcase just by looking at her. And, honestly, I was feeling jealous. It was impossible not to be. Xavier told me little about their past, but what I did know was that they were very hot and heavy. Sure, she tortured him on a daily basis with knives and captivity, but he told me he loved her. Xavier has a past with dozens upon dozens of women that I know nothing about. Only Elizabeth and the witch I had killed were two of the women I knew he had slept with. I hated being in a room with her. Technically, I was her replacement. It would have been less awkward if I had exes so that I could understand better. I’ve only had sex with one man, and he currently held me protectively behind him with his eyes on his ex.
“My sweetie!” Elizabeth cried with a seductive wink at Xavier.
My fangs extended. It wasn’t even on purpose.
“So you’ve been keeping my creator here, have you? Yet another lie you’ve told me,” Xavier said to Matthew.
“You didn’t need to know where she was.” Matthew was checking to make sure Joanna was okay before looking up at us. “She’s my business, anyway.”
“And mine,” said a new voice.
Liam strolled in with his eyes on Elizabeth. He looked at me and gave a grin.
“Ah, so this is the deal you made with Matthew? Give him his runaway wife in exchange for your creator.” Xavier clapped his hands together as if it were an amusing show.
Joanna glared at Liam. “You bastard,” she snapped.
“I’m sorry, mate. I’ve been looking for her way before you were born.” Liam placed a hand on Elizabeth’s shoulder. “Is the witch here?”
A witch? He was going to break the curse that tied his life to hers. But I doubted it stopped there. The curse that kept him and Xavier from fighting was sure to be broken as well. Xavier seemed to come to the same realization because he suddenly stiffened.
“The witch won’t be here until tomorrow. You will have to stay the day until then,” Matthew explained.
Liam turned to Xavier, his blue eyes twinkling with delight. “Until tomorrow.”
“But,” Matthew added, “The witch will be only doing one thing for you.”
“That wasn’t our deal!”
“Our deal was for me to bring you Elizabeth and a witch to break the curse. I’m doing as I had said. The curse the witch will be breaking will be the one that ties your life to hers. I’d prefer to keep the other one intact. I cannot have my best fighters kill each other.”
Liam growled.
Elizabeth smiled in satisfaction as if it were all her idea.
Matthew poured himself a drink and sat next to Joanna. “I also can’t have you stake Elizabeth.”
