Chapter Two

"Dawn, how could we abandon our post like that? You knew for a fact that the servants of the Darkness were planning a raid! Tarka informed us of the update before our watch shift began. You have disappointed everyone, Dawn, including yourself," Dularis finished. He lowered himself onto his forelegs and waited expectantly.

Dawn, a fifteen-year-old orphan, was the newest arrival in the Lithia Guardians, the largest rebel group fighting the Darkness. He was pure evil, the voice of the darkest forces in Hades. Almost everyone in Lithia had either fallen captive to the deceptively malevolent ways of the Darkness' trickery, had been slain by the blood-covered hands of the Darkness' many servants, or was part of a rebel group traveling from village to village, ensuring peace with the leaders and encouraging their strength in the One True God, Jesus. Almost every rebel believed that Jesus could bring their land back to the way it was, with civilized churches having meetings instead of forbidden underground gatherings where lives were at risk

Lithia's forests were once all safe havens for rebels. However, about six months ago, all the beauty of the woodland dwellers vanished instantly. News of a spy who had successfully infiltrated a rebel micro-base on the south side, which contained around five or six moderately trained weapon-holders, swirled around Lithia. The spy had talked information about the strongholds throughout many forests out of a younger member. Then, after sneaking away safely in the middle of the night, when evil powers are the strongest, she reported it to one of the Darkness' foremen. From there, an eighth of the warriors of evil swarmed over all the forests, and only a few had enough rebels to properly defend the forests and keep them under rebel control. The rest were overtaken, and the rebels were murdered in cold blood. Over two hundred and fifty innocent lives were lost that day.

Dularis was a magnificent white stallion. He had resided in Lithia ever since the dawn of its existence. He was originally an extremely powerful wizard, but he had been taught a lesson by a spiteful fairy. Now, he would do whatever he could to help his current friend and master, Dawn.

Dawn had a small problem. Well, technically, this issue was insolvable for her: she could not stand up and have the courage to fight an enemy. Ever since she had joined the Guardins, she had been fleeing from fights more and more often. No matter how many times Dularis dissuaded her, she could not face it. Now, Dawn sat cross-legged in front of the roaring fire. Her pretty face gleamed with the tears she had recently shed.

"I know, Dularis, I know. I need to face my fears, but for some reason, I just can't. Not after..." She paused for what seemed like an eternity, then shakily continued.

"Not after what happened that night." Dawn silently broke down in tears.

Dularis raised himself up and trotted over to comfort her.

"Look, Dawn, it's been a long time since it happened. Maybe it is time to just forgive and forget..."he trailed off and there was silence in the grim nightly surroundings. After a long period of nothing but the night sounds, Dawn sighed.

"I just don't know if I can just forget them. I mean, they were everything to me.". Four years ago, Dawn's parents, Scarlette and Ian, were fighting a horde of evil dwarfs that had invaded their base and home. They died looking into each other's eyes, with their young daughter, Dawn, watching them. Their efforts were not in vain, though. Every base was stocked with more fighters and one weapon engineer, because they were the only two trained fighters at their base at the time, and their daughter was spared. However, there was a price for Dawn. She was afraid to fight for fear that she would die just like her parents did, while saving no one.

"Dawn, I..." But before Dularis could finish, Dawn interrupted.

"It's been a long day for me. I'm going to get some rest. It's going to be a big day tomorrow. Julianus is gonna be awfully angry that I left my post... Good night." And with that, Dawn curled up into a ball and drifted off to sleep. Dularis got to his feet and walked over to the other side of the fire, which was now reduced to mere embers.

"Oh, Dawn," he whinnied softly. "You will never heal the hurt until you trust completely in Jesus. He is the only one who can help you, and you will conquer you fears." With these gentle words, he knelt and dozed off to sleep as well.
