Nyani

The steady beeping of the machine which gave read outs of his blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen levels was sure to send my blood pressure through the roof. I sat and stared at the offending object praying the numbers would stay the same or dramatically improve. Me, Katia and the gang had been by his side the last 24 hours he'd been life flighted to the E.R and that was just a little over 36 hours ago.

From what Dr. Anson the on call trauma surgeon told us the surgery had been touch and go. If Nikolaus had not been born with dextrocardia a congenital heart defect in which his heart pointed toward the right side of his chest instead of the left side. The bullet would've torn straight through his heart we were told to be thankful that it was a through and through gunshot wound.

He'd woken up 3 times since he'd come out of surgery and each time he was so out of it from the cocktail of drugs they were pumping into him that he would open his eyes look around and pass out. All I'd had been doing was worrying over Niko since the moment I learned he'd been shot I knew I looked like shit. Sleep in this place wasn't even in the cards you would think the chairs in a hospital that only catered to the rich and famous would at least be comfortable so not the case.

A hand softly squeezing my shoulder brought me out of my thoughts shifting in my seat and looking up my eyes landed on Taylin.

"Nyani you should go home get a proper shower and a decent meal." He said as his worried gaze swept over my face.

Turning my nose up at him I shook my head I wasn't going any damn where. I would only consider leaving to get myself together when Niko woke up and started talking.

"I'm not leaving until he's awake and sitting up in bed." Grabbing Niko's hand I kissed each of his knuckles.

"C'mon Nyani look at Katia she can barely keep her eyes open." Damien said budding in.

Looking over at my friend I could only smile Katia was folded awkwardly in one of the bed side chairs with her head bobbing sideways. You could tell she was trying to stay awake but was completely failing she looked so uncomfortable. Swinging my eyes between brother and sister I was stuck. If I were to leave I could possibly miss him waking up and that would make me feel just terrible, but if I didn't leave I don't think myself and Katia would last much longer. I choose Katia like I always did.

"I'll go home but just for a shower and some food." I stressed.

Clapping my hands together I looked at the 4 of them. "Which one of you is going to wake Katia up and convince her to do the same?" They all hesitated. Smiling to myself I slowly turned back around they could argue about it amongst themselves.

I'd barely been asleep little more than an hour when I heard the commotion from downstairs. Hopping out of bed I grabbed my robe and made a beeline for the door but before I could touch it there was a frantic knock. Snatching the door open I came face to face with Alexei. Asking what all the noise was about he got this look on his face that's when he told me Niko had been shoot. It felt like my feet were being pulled from under me he barely managed to catch me before I hit the ground. Righting me he grabbed my hand and started pulling me down the hallway I felt dizzy and nauseous the world was spinning and I was just along for the ride. Sharp pen like pricks stabbed behind my eyes as I held in the tears that so desperately wanted to escape.

Everything was moving at a fast past. A minute had barely gone by and Alexi was already pulling Katia out of her room. Rushing us down the stairs at the back side of the house we ran through the kitchen to the garage. Just before we could climb into the sleek black escalade Taylins short but stocky frame came barreling out of the kitchen..........

Loud noises jarred me from inside my head this time jerking around and standing to my feet I observed Katia going off on the four men in Russian. You would think she was ten feet tall from the looks on their faces. I shook my head I had to put a stop to the madness unfolding before my very eyes.

"Katia stop yelling you're in a hospital for god sake." She looked at Niko than back at me.

"They're telling me I need to go home." Tears started to roll down her face poor thing she was just as stressed as I was. Slowly walking over to her I wrapped my arms around her.

"I know that they told me the same thing." Pulling back from the hug I whipped away her fallen tears.

"I refused at first but I see their point we've worried ourselves ragged Katia. A hot shower and a delicious hot meal might lift our spirits just a little bit." She took a few steps away from me.

"But I don't want to leave I..." I cut her off mid sentence.

"I don't want to leave him either but it will be good for us we won't be gone for long." We just stood there staring at at one another. Getting our attention Anthony spoke up.

"Taylin and Demetrius will go with you. Alexei and Dmitry are waiting down stairs in the lobby to drive you back to the mansion."

My gaze jumped from Katia to him he looked like he was struggling to keep it together himself. Looking over at each of them they all looked the same. I could relate to the pain they were feeling. He was their brother and they probably thought they had failed in protecting him.

"Ok." Katia spoke she sounded so broken.

Walking over to his bedside I looked down at him with half his chest wrapped in gauges I ran my fingers along the tattoos which inked the skin not covered by bandages. They told tall tales of his past crimes. Each unspeakable act marred his flesh not only as a reminder to never forget but as a way to show the world how far he'd be willing to go. Had he regretted any of the things his tattoos said he'd done? I would never know because the only person who could answer that was an emotionally disabled mess of a man.

Grabbing my purse I looked over at Katia she'd leaned down and was whispering something in Niko's ear. Kissing his cheek she righted her self walking over to the chair she'd been sitting in minutes ago she grabbed her phone. Turning we nodded our heads at each other if we were going to get through this it would be together.

Walking towards the door she held out her hand for me to take before reaching out to take her hand I bent down and lightly kissed him on his lips. Staring down at his beautiful face I smiled he just looked so peaceful. I let out a big sigh of relief a calmness I hadn't felt since this ordeal started suddenly washed over me that's when I knew today could have only been a test of my strength.
