“Do you still remember how you were turned?” I chuckled quietly, passing the small porcelain cup to the young female as I walked past her to sit in the armchair opposite. The fire danced in the corner as I settled down.
“I understand that its rare for you young ones to see someone close to my age but really, its much like you are able to remember your turning Miss..?” I left the sentence hanging since the petite brunette had yet to introduce herself, a manner that is much more common nowadays than my day. Huh, ‘my day’ does make me sound old though I really felt far from it.
“Oh, its Scarlett, Scarlett Lemsey.” I drank some of the blood from the cup and watched as she drank hers, breaking off to reply though I could tell she struggled to, even for politeness sake. Sighing quietly I could just imagine how someone like her would be turned, not even 5 years of age and already out on her own, no family to take care of her.
“Leon, a pleasure.” And with that silence fell for a good couple of minutes in which she managed to drink everything from her cup and started tapping her nails nervously against it, waiting for someone to start the conversation.
“So….” She would have made a very poor Lady, with a small shake of the head I placed the delicate cup on the small table that separated us two.
“I understand that this isn’t the first time you tried contacting me, I presume the one who left this letter at my door was you?” I nodded towards one of the cabinets lining the wall and the cheap paper envelope addressed to me that stood at the forefront of the books and pressed against the glass pane.
“Oh yeah, I came round a month ago but the guy at the door said you were out of the country so I just left the letter. Do you know him?” I understood that she didn’t mean the man at the door but settled down against the back of the chair.
“This Taylor Arman, if I remember correctly?” I had thought about the name for a while after reading the letter, until I remembered where I had heard the name before, he was one of the most infamous 20th century vampires, almost rising up to the rank of coven leader last I heard. A sad, sad affair.
“Yeah, last I heard he was passing through here but nobody wanted to tell my any info on him ever since I woke up.” The frustration was clear in her voice, it rather pained me to be the deliverer of the news but it’ll be better to hear this from me than if she found this Arman.
“Before I share any knowledge, would you be willing to share the story of your rebirth with me? I am interested in the way that this Arman acts and frankly, you are the first fledgling of his I have been informed of in these parts.” It would be unusual if others from her bloodline were on my territory and I was somehow unaware of it, though if I was able to find out from her how he goes about choosing his prey I would be able to look through the latest incident reports and match them with this.
“I- erm, I can’t remember much but alright… “ she settled back on the chair, though still as tense as when she walked in, and as she picked the bottom of her frayed jumper she started talking.
“It was just over 5 years ago when I started dating this guy…” she trailed off for a second.
“Taylor Arman?” I brought her back gently, making her glazed brown eyes snap back to me, as if remembering where she was. The memory must have been tied to her with strong emotion if she got so lost at the beginning.
“Yeah, Taylor Arman. He was a cool guy, like the type you read about you know- ok, maybe you won’t but- “she laughed breathlessly, I just smiled but stayed silent, letting her continue.
“We had fun, did normal things like going to the movies and hanging out, like normal people. He didn’t burn in the sun, ok so he ate less than most but he passed it off as a calorie controlled diet which I totally got since he was really toned.” An uncomfortable blush appeared on her face as she recollected that, I remember what that was like, but this time it was this young thing that was about to get hurt through the attachment.
