Papyrus stood outside his house in Snowdin, Sans hadn't come home and he was beginning to become worried. He slowly began to make his way around the town. Something was off, it was too quiet. He walked into Muffet's place, he stood there stunned. It was dark the lights were off and the restaurant was completely empty.
The eerie silence was interrupted but the sound of Papyrus's phone buzzing. He looked at the caller ID, it was Alphys. He answered, "Hey Alphys what's going on?"
"Do you know where Sans is?" She asked frantically, Papyrus had never heard her voice so shaky before.
"I just went out looking for him," his concern began to grow, "he's not with you?"
"No numbskull! Why do you think I would be calling you?" She yelled, "he's not answering his phone either."
Papyrus felt his soul sink. Sans always answered his phone without fail. Something was wrong. "Okay," he said trying to keep his voice steady, "I'll keep an eye socket out."
"Call me if you find him."
He clicked the phone off and went back outside. Papyrus scanned again until his eye sockets stopped on something. He saw a figure and the riverbank, he squinted against the bright snow. There was a tint of green but then it ran off quickly, then he noticed something else: a blue cloth. As he got closer he realized it had been the thing he had been dreading: Sans's blue scarf sprinkled with dust.
Papyrus felt his soul shatter at the sight. He knew it had to be the human. He felt tears welling up in his eye sockets, blurring his vision. Gently he picked up the scarf and tenderly wrapped it around his neck. He continued on.
It seemed like he had been walking forever but somehow he made it to the lab. He went to put in the code to access the lab, but the keypad had been destroyed. The was a hole and sparks were flying out from it. His eye sockets widened. Instantly he teleported inside the lab.
The sight in front of him was horrible. He saw the lab was disheveled and Undyne back up against the wall paralyzed in fear. In front of her was a small human child. Undyne looked up to see Papyrus and their eyes met.
"Pap," she said, a faint smile appeared on her face. But as quickly as it appeared it disappeared along with the glint of hope in her eyes. She broke her eyes away and looked down to find the knife lodged in her stomach. The human twisted the knife, making Undyne writhe in pain. Then pulled it out and turned to look at Papyrus. She smiled at him then ran off deeper into the lab.
Papyrus ran towards Undyne, her blue color began to grow pale. She swayed heavily and Papyrus tried to steady her. She collapsed in his arms and he knelt to the floor. She was struggling to keep her eyes open, gently Papyrus turned her head to look at him, "No, No, No, come Dyne stay with me," his voice cracked when he said her name.
She looked up in his general direction, blood trickled from the corner of her mouth, "P-pap," she said weakly.
"Shhh shh I'm here," An orange tear fell from his eye and landed on her cheek "I'm so sorry."
"Y-you were s-supposed to protect m-me," she said, her fingertips started to dissolve into dust.
For the second time that day he felt his soul break, he had failed her. She turned to dust in his arms.
Papyrus jolted awake, gasping for breath. He looked around, he was in the lab. He felt a tug on his sweatshirt. He looked to find Undyne with a worried expression on her face, "P-pap are you o-oka-" she stopped when she saw the tears in his eyes. He looked at her as he had seen a ghost. Suddenly Papyrus tackled her to the floor and pulled her into a tight hug. She felt his soul beat quickly against her own. She felt his ribs collapse and expand. He held her as if at any second she would disappear forever.
Finally he broke away still holding her tightly. Tears rolled down his face. She gently wiped them away and held his face in her hands, "Shhh it's okay, you're okay, Sans is okay, it was just a nightmare." She kept her voice steady and smooth.
He searched her eyes then buried his head in her shoulder wrapping his arms around her waist once more. He sobbed as he mumbled something inaudible over and over again. She gently rubbed his back letting him know she was there for him. He looked up at her, "I'm so sorry," he said, heartbroken, "Please, if a human ever comes down here, be careful."
She wiped away his fresh tears, "I-I will." She wondered what exactly he saw, whatever it was it had spooked him pretty bad, "I'm here and I'm n-not leaving you."
They stayed on the floor for awhile just holding each other. Finally Papyrus spoke, "Dyne... Will you stay with me," he asked shyly, "I know it's dumb but I don't think I can go back to sleep alone."
She gave a weak smile and nodded at him. They both climbed back on the couch. Undyne was closer the back of the couch and Papyrus was closer to the edge. Undyne listened to Papyrus's soul beating quickly, she couldn't help but worry about his this had been happening more and more often. Undyne felt his breathing slow and she wrapped her arms around him a bit tighter. She thought about when a human would fall down here and she wondered what they would be like. She looked up at Papyrus, his chin rested on her head. He looked at peace unlike earlier. Undyne looked back on what happened when he was sleeping, how his face was contorted in pain, anger and near the end sadness. And when she had woken him up he looked scared. She held him close to her as their souls beat together through the night.
